Nadine was busy confronting Jean and didn't notice Evelyn charging in. By the time she realized her presence, the back of her hand was already visibly red. Nadine lowered her gaze and glanced apathetically at her reddening hand before lifting her gaze to meet Evelyn's.

Her eyes were as cold as ice as she said, "You're being awfully protective of Jean, Evelyn. What is she, your illegitimate daughter?"

As soon as her words fell, Evelyn's expression changed dramatically. Her face flushed with anger in an instant. "Watch what you're saying, Nadine Scott! Stop spewing such ridiculous nonsense!"

Her reaction only confirmed Nadine's suspicions. A sly smile played on Nadine's lips as she said, "If that's the case, then they absolutely can't get married. Children born of the same mother are siblings, you know?"

Ever since Nadine met Evelyn, the latter had always gone out of her way to defend Jean. Sometimes, when Gigi and Jean had disagreements, Evelyn would side with Jean over her own daughter, Gigi. Evelyn often treated Jean with more affection than she did her own daughter.

It spoke volumes about Evelyn and Jean's unusual relationship. Aside from being mother and daughter, Nadine couldn't think of any other explanation. After all, who would be this good to someone with no blood relation?

Considering Evelyn's earlier reaction, it was hard not to think they were mother and daughter. Besides, when she looked at them, the resemblance was striking.
