Chapter 52
Juliet is head over heels for you. You should have used that to your advantage long ago, Hugo scolded lightly.
Brantley looked at Hugo without any emotion. I hope you won’t change your mind later”
“The Lindstrom family shares the same blood. I know you’re dedicated to your Municipal Government job, but don’t ignore potential business profits, Hugo said, sipping his chamomile tea.
To Hugo, Brantley’s mother had been more of a marriage alliance for business interests rather than a personal preference. Since her passing, Brantley’s temperament had changed dramatically, but Hugo reminded himself that he was his son, after all..
“Help Jaxon whenever you can. After all, you two are brothers. About your mother… Hugo started
Brantley narrowed his eyes, hiding his emotions. I don’t have a brother. My mother only had one son.”
Watching Brantley walk away, Hugo sighed. He knew Brantley was exceptional but stubborn. If Brantley could let go of his grudges and work with Jaxon, they could lead the Lindstrom Group to new heights.
Brantley left the study and bumped into Jaxon, who had rushed back after receiving a call from Queenie, in the hallway.
“Brantley!” Jaxon called out.
But Brantley didn’t respond and simply walked away, taking Juliet with him without even staying for dinner.
The atmosphere in the car was somewhat tense.
“Brantley, does your dad dislike me?” Juliet asked, nervously twisting a piece of her clothing
“No, he doesn’t mind us being together, Brantley said, his handsome face as unreadable as ever.
Juliet couldn’t tell if Brantley was just trying to comfort her. Based on everyone’s expression at the Lindstrom residence earlier, it was clear they weren’t thrilled about her
“I’ll take you to dinner, Brantley suggested
“Okay!” Juliet’s mood lifted instantly at the thought of their first dinner date.
Seeing her cheerful expression, Brantley’s gaze shifted, though his thoughts remained inscrutable inside his deep eyes.
Mikayla stretched and tidied her desk, locking up important files before stepping out of her office. She spoke to Quinnlyn, who was working nearby. “Leave the reports on my desk later. I’ll come in early tomorrow to review them.”
“Okay!” Quinnlyn replied.
“Thanks for your hard work. I have some errands to run, so I’m leaving early. Dinner is on me tonight. Make sure to fill out your overtime sheets,” Mikayla announced.
“Thank you, Ms. Salvatore!” the team chorused. In the next moment, they started debating what to eat.
Mikayla heard the noise and smiled. She called Josiah when she was walking to the elevator.
Meanwhile, Huxley glanced up from his corner. Seeing the closed office doors and the group excited about dinner, he felt indignant “Why does she get to leave early while I have to stay for overtime?
Mikayla sat in the back seat, looking at the scenery outside the windows. There were many bare tree trunks. ‘How much longer until spring!” she wondered and couldn’t help but think of Carlos, who had been gone for days.
Josiah, what do you guys usually do at the military base?” she asked.
“Training,” Josiah replied.
“That question seems a bit redundant, she thought. “Was it boring every day?” She remembered how Xavier complained the first time he came back to the military base, saying life there was unbearable. She really didn’t understand how Carlos and the others put up with it.
The car fell silent, making Mikayla wonder if she had asked something she shouldn’t have.
Josiah glanced at the rearview mirror. Life at the military base was anything but dull. There were things Carlos had instructed them not to tell Mikayla.
Chapter 52
The black car stopped outside the Ludwig mansion. Selena came out and greeted Mikayla warmly. Seeing that it was Josiah driving, she kindly invited him in to rest
“It’s fine. Ma, Salvatore, just give me a call when you’re ready to leave. Josiah said, then drove away.
Mikayla felt something off in the way Josiah and Selena talked and looked at each other. Sure, Josiah used to be Carlos‘ driver and they knew each other, but it shouldn’t have been like this. Even though Josiah was a Guardian and a bit arrogant, he always showed respect to Carlos and her. Selena, on the other hand, seemed to hold Josiah in even higher regard.
“Mikayla, Em so sorry! Garrett suddenly has a social engagement and probably won’t be back until late at night” Selena said.
“It’s all right! I just came to visit you and Natasha, Mikayla replied, handing some gifts to the servant.
“Thanks, but you don’t have to buy things next time, Selena said politely.
“Just a little something to show my respect, Mrs. Ludwig Mikayla looked around the living room
m and asked, “Where’s Natasha?”
“She’s in the backyard and asked me to direct you there when you arrived” Selena smiled. “It’s right over—”
“Til go find her Mikayla, familiar with the place, went straight inside.
Selena choked back her unspoken words and instructed the servant to bring out some hot coffee. Deidre suddenly came unexpectedly. What if they meet… Selena wondered if she should call Carlos or Garrett,
While Selena hesitated, Mikayla reached the backyard. The garden was filled with exotic flowers, and their fragrance was strong even from a distance. Unlike the front yard, the whole back garden was covered with glass to keep it warm in winter. ‘Garrett and Selena has really gone to great lengths for Natasha, Mikayla thought
