"You wouldn't dare?" Samuel sneered. He didn't think there was anything Kylie was afraid of.
The effects of the drug, which had mostly faded, now surged back with full force, and Samuel wasn't sure if it was because of her.
His face darkened, and his eyes were filled with suppressed anger.
Damn it. He actually reacted toward her.
"Yes, I wouldn't dare." Kylie sensed the change in him and didn't dare move. She simply stayed still as her heart pounded wildly in her chest.
"Relax. How could I bear to let you die? That'd be far too boring." Samuel dangerously narrowed his eyes as he said in a hoarse voice, "There's something far more important I need you for right now."
A flush crept up Kylie's cheeks.
A thought surfaced in her mind, but she quickly dismissed it as impossible.
Samuel had made it clear that he would never touch her. Besides, everyone knew him as a man of discipline and self-control—someone who stayed away from women.
Kylie steadied herself and asked, "What do you mean?"
Samuel's voice was thick with desire. "A man seeks out a woman in the middle of the night, in a situation like this—you're either really innocent or just pretending to be."
Her suspicion was confirmed, and she froze.
It was at least a two-hour drive from Seaville to Starlight Summit.
He was obviously using her as an antidote.
Kylie quickly said, "Didn't you say you wanted me to be a widow? A man like you can have any woman you want. When you come all this way just for me, it's hard not to misunderstand your intentions."
"You think I can't live without you?" Samuel's tone was ice-cold. He reached out, gripped her chin, and forced her to meet his gaze. "You'd better not get that idea."
Then, he said, "I've just changed my mind. You started this. You don't get to decide when and how it ends. If you want to live under the title of Mrs. Vance, you'll have to pay the price for it, and pain is the only way you'll learn."
Kylie's fingers clenched tightly in her lap. "It takes two hours to get here from Seaville. Wouldn't it make more sense to do this with the woman you actually love?"
