I glanced at Arthur, somewhat surprised. Wasn't it rumored that the Lawson family didn't treat Jared well?
Yet here his father was, looking so worried. He seemed to truly care about his son.
"Well then, sign it."
Trembling, Arthur scrawled his signature on the document. After handing it to me, he asked, "When can Jared be released?"
"Don't worry. You won't have to wait long," I said, resting my chin on my hands as though deep in thought. "Once I feel he's been punished enough, I'll let him out."
Arthur nodded. As he left with a hunched back, he seemed ten years older in an instant.
"Jared should consider himself lucky for having a father like that," I muttered to myself.
…
A month later, Jared was bailed out of jail. His time inside had been far from pleasant.
For a pampered young heir to suddenly find himself behind bars, the psychological toll alone was unbearable.
Despite having spent so much effort to get his son out, Arthur felt disgusted by him. "You're absolutely useless!"
He had told Jared to cozy up to Yvonne, hoping to leverage her to secure business with the Joplin family. But it turned out that she had no influence on that side—she was nothing but an empty shell.
Noting Jared's blank and dazed expression, William kicked him twice in frustration. "Dad, why bother saving this useless piece of shit? You should've just let him rot in prison and fend for himself!"
He had always been at odds with Jared, and his brother's downfall had delighted him. Yet never had he imagined that their father would go so far as to bankrupt the family to rescue him.
"Do you think I wanted to? If I didn't make certain sacrifices, Cole wouldn't have spared us even if Jared rotted in prison," Arthur said.
He shot a glare at Jared, who was trailing behind him, and snapped, "Hurry up! You're embarrassing us."
The news of Jared's release dominated the media.
Yvonne, to her credit, shielded Xavier from hearing about it. Her heart ached when she saw how noticeably thinner and unkempt Jared became.
