When I woke up, I found myself in the hospital. The pungent smell of disinfectant made me feel as though I was drenched in alcohol.
I lifted my head and saw my parents, who looked as if they had aged ten years.
"What are you doing here?"
Seeing me awake, Mom kept pressing the call button by the bedside. "Will you ever stop worrying us?"
She wiped at the tears gathering at the corners of her eyes while her sobs escaped uncontrollably.
"Mom, aren't I fine now? I'm okay."
She was crying as if I were on the verge of dying.
"And what if something had happened to you? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?"
This accident had almost cost me my life, and with my old injuries flaring up again, Mom said that the doctor had warned them that had I arrived any later, I wouldn't have made it.
"If something happens to you, how do you expect your father and me to go on?"
Mom wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, her whole being on the verge of collapse.
I couldn't bear to see her sob by my bedside any longer. I shot Dad a look. "Dad, I want to rest."
I noticed the glimmer of tears in his eyes too, though he tried to keep them from showing.
Only after they left did I finally breathe a sigh of relief. Not even ten minutes later, I heard a knock at the door. Thinking it was Mom again, I pretended to be asleep as I didn't want to deal with whoever was outside.
Thankfully, the knocking soon stopped.
The next moment, I heard the door being pushed open, followed by a faint fragrance of perfume. The scent was so familiar, one I used to encounter often.
It was Yvonne.
"I know you're not asleep."
The test results showed that I had three broken ribs and a comminuted fracture in my ankle. The knife the culprit had held was also stabbed into my arm. Meanwhile, Lorraine, who had been in the passenger seat, was completely unscathed.
"What are you doing here?" I didn't bother to hide my hostility toward Yvonne.
"I came to check on you."
