"Are you asking to reconcile? Are you asking for us to get back together?"
I lifted her chin gently and chuckled at the flash of seriousness in her gaze. "If anyone should ask for a reconciliation, it should be me asking you, shouldn't it?"
Lorraine's expression turned awkward as she quickly averted her gaze. "That's not necessary," she muttered.
"Wait for me."
…
On the day of my discharge, I sought Jonas' opinion.
"Are you planning to surprise Ms. Sommerton, Daddy?"
His tone was neutral without the slightest trace of joy or discontent. He did seem somewhat indifferent.
"Jonas, do you like the idea of me being with Ms. Sommerton?" I asked. I knew both Jonas and Xavier refused to have me remarry, but now that Jared and Yvonne had their happy ending, there was no need for me to remain single for Yvonne's sake.
This time, Jonas gave me a different response. "Are you happy, Daddy?"
Jonas had been unusually down for days. I had no idea what he meant by his questions, and just as I was about to clarify, he reminded me, "You have to tell the truth."
"I'm happy when I'm with Ms. Sommerton," I confessed. Then, I crouched down to meet his gaze, hoping to reassure him. "Don't worry, Jonas. Even if we're together, I'll never neglect you."
Jonas' eyes sparkled like stars in the night sky. He had seen Lorraine's kindness over these days, and I knew I could never give up on a woman like her.
"Ms. Sommerton proposed to me that night. I can't break my promises, can I?" I teased, playfully brushing his nose. I was reminded of what I had told him.
