The moment I opened the door, I heard Grandma berating me sharply.
"You think you're invincible now, huh? How dare you bring that woman home without telling us in advance?"
When Grandma watched the news earlier this morning, she realized that I wasn't kidding at all. Her gaze was currently pinned on Lorraine. A huff soon escaped her lips.
"As for you… You really are a skilled fox for being able to put Cole under a spell!"
"Grandma, whatever it is you have to say, just say it to me. I'm the one who orchestrated the incident. Also, I'm the one who proposed to Lorraine. If you're displeased in any way, just tell me."
Grandma slammed her hand onto the table, causing the steaming tea to splash out of her cup and onto the back of her hand. As a result, her hand got scalded and turned red.
I was quick to shield Lorraine from Grandma. She couldn't exactly see Grandma's expression, but she could feel her wrath.
Lorraine wanted to explain the truth to Grandma, but I grabbed her hand immediately. Then, I turned around to glance at her before mouthing the words, "Calm down."
"Grandma, I'll marry Lorraine. If you don't agree to our marriage, I'll leave the Joplin family right away."
"How preposterous!"
Grandma was so mad at me that her cheeks flushed heavily. She pointed at Lorraine while screeching, "You're planning to leave the Joplin family for the sake of a stranger?"
"Grandma, you're too used to manipulating me."
To Grandma, I was nothing but a puppet. She had planned for everything except the fact that puppets like me still possessed free will.
Grandma huffed coldly once again. She picked up a document from the table while asking, "Since you claim that you want to marry her, do you know what her family background is like?"
Lorraine froze, and I could feel her trembling behind me.
"It's fine, Lorraine."
I had a feeling I knew what the document contained.
As expected, it contained information on Lorraine's family background. Her older brother was a notorious gambler who almost sold her in exchange for money. Her family company had been reduced to nothing but an empty shell.
Grandma's shrill tone was able to cut deep into Lorraine's heart. "Her family is waiting for you two to get married so that they can receive a huge amount of money from you! Why else do you think she sought you out?"
I could see the hint of disdain in Grandma's eyes. She continued softly, "Cole, you're a smart guy. You know what to choose."
I could hear the smugness dripping from her tone.
