"It doesn't matter who said that to me. I'm going to ask you this once—is that true?"
With a pale face, Yvonne stared at Jared stubbornly.
"This is your son you're talking about, Yvonne! Why would I kill him?"
Disappointment flashed across Jared's eyes. "So, you're willing to believe Cole but not me, huh?"
Although Yvonne knew that Jared was saying these things on purpose, her heart still softened.
"How can you prove that this incident has nothing to do with you?"
"Yvonne, I solemnly swear that I've taken Xavier as my own son this whole time."
Yvonne stared at Jared's serious expression for some time. In the end, she didn't have the heart to shun him. Instead, she lowered her head, her expression still glum. "I'll believe you this time."
Elation instantly broke out on Jared's face. He pulled Yvonne into a hug while gushing, "Don't worry, Yvonne. I'll definitely protect Xavier. No harm will come to him, I promise."
…
Back in Joplin Group, Jonas kept shaking his head, his eyes trained on my and Lorraine's marriage certificate. "This isn't real."
I tapped him on the head, clearly surprised. "How is it not real?"
"It just isn't!"
Jonas' mouth twitched into a stubborn scowl. He turned his head away to avoid my hand.
I knew that he didn't want to admit that my marriage with Lorraine was legal.
Lorraine and I exchanged looks. We didn't plan on forcing Jonas to accept our marriage. Instead, I pulled out the bank card that I had already prepared in advance while looking at Lorraine.
"Now that we're married, when are you introducing me to your parents?"
"I—"
Before Lorraine could finish speaking, we heard a commotion blaring from outside.
Murphy began knocking on the door rapidly. It irked me to no end.
"What's with the ruckus? Why do you look so alarmed?"
As soon as I opened the door, the person standing outside my office rushed in right away. He bolted past me, and it was clear that Lorraine was his target. Without any warning, he delivered a heavy slap across her face.
"What the hell?"
I grabbed the intruder's wrist before dragging him away. "Who are you? How dare you kick up a ruckus on my turf?"
Upon detecting the hostility in my tone, the intruder shrank away from me.
"Are you Cole Joplin?"
