The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 178

My hand felt stiff as I patted Jonas' arm, and I shot Lorraine a questioning look, wondering if she understood what she was saying. It was such an unexpected suggestion.

"I'll be there soon," Lorraine promised, placing a gentle kiss on Jonas' cheek.

Nonetheless, his furrowed brows showed he was not entirely convinced. He was taking this very seriously.

I said, "Jonas, Ms. Sommerton will come over shortly. Why don't we go inside first?"

Jonas was clearly anxious, and as I carried him back to his room, he kept looking back at Lorraine the entire time.

As I did not know where Lorraine had gone either, I told Jonas she was taking a shower. After 30 minutes passed, Jonas showed no signs of sleepiness and seemed more awake than ever. "Daddy, why isn't Ms. Sommerton here yet?"

Jonas bit his lower lip nervously before asking, "Does she think I'm a burden?"

Seeing the look of remorse on his young face broke my heart. How could such a small child harbor such guilty feelings?

This could not have come from him alone; someone must have planted these thoughts. I asked, "Jonas, who told you these things?"

I wondered if it was Yvonne.

"No one... No one did," he insisted.

I had kept Jonas away from school lately, worried about any psychological impact from the playground incident. Yet these troubling thoughts still plagued him.

Jonas hung his head low, seemingly terrified of being abandoned. It felt like someone was stabbing the softest part of my heart with a needle. The pain coursed through my entire body, making me tremble uncontrollably.
