The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 179

Jonas forced a smile, but I could tell he was not entirely happy about my new marriage. Despite not being his biological mother, Jonas had tried his best to show Lorraine acceptance. Even so, I could see some hesitation in his eyes.

At least Jonas could tolerate Lorraine, and that was enough for me. I could not ask for more.

After finally getting Jonas to sleep, I was about to head downstairs to turn off the lights when I heard a quick, sharp knock at the door.

"Who is it?"

"It's me. I came to stay with Jonas."

To my surprise, it really was Lorraine, standing at my doorstep in a silk nightgown with her head lowered. When she heard the door open, she shifted awkwardly and asked, "Is Jonas asleep?"

I replied, "He dozed off just a little while ago."

She was holding a blanket, and it looked like she was planning to stay over. I gently guided her by the shoulders out of the room and carefully closed the door behind us. Once we reached the living room, we could finally speak normally.

"Had a change of heart?" I teased, remembering how she had blushed earlier.

"No, it's just... I feel bad for Jonas," Lorraine mumbled, her eyes welling up with tears.

I could not help but feel moved by her genuine concern. I replied, "I figured that was it."

I glanced toward the guest room, hinting that she should not take things too seriously. "Kids change their minds all the time. You don't need to take it to heart. I'll stay with him."

"But I can't go back on my word," she protested.

I turned to look her up and down. Her hair was still wet, probably from a recent shower, and her silk nightgown hung loosely on her frame.
