The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 294

I watched their awkward interactions through the rear-view mirror and said, "Alright, alright. There's no need to be so formal with each other. We're family."

Lorraine turned her head away in embarrassment.

Mom had wanted to take Lorraine's hand and have a proper conversation, but she stopped herself. She didn't even have Lorraine's contact information. Acting so close all of a sudden might just end up scaring Lorraine.

"Lorraine, you're already married to Cole. It's only proper for you to call me 'Mom,'" Mom said in a gentle voice. She was usually a non-confrontational person, so ignoring Lorraine before was entirely out of character for her.

Both Lorraine and I were stunned for a moment, but I recovered first. "Lorraine, go ahead."

"What? Mom…" Lorraine said softly.

Mom started to tear up. She never expected Lorraine to still be willing to call her that after how she had been treating Lorraine all this while. She was overcome with emotion as she turned away to wipe her eyes.

"Mom, don't be like this," Lorraine said as she tried to comfort her. But Lorraine didn't know what to say and could only turn her head to ask me for help.

I watched her expression and decided to tease her a bit. I turned my head away and pretended not to notice anything. All the while, Lorraine kept shooting looks at me.

I kept on ignoring her. The two of them needed to resolve the tension between them eventually, after all.

If Lorraine didn't take the initiative, then Mom would. It was not my place to interfere.

When she realized that I wasn't going to help, Lorraine finally acted. "Mom, don't worry. I'll definitely take care of you with Cole."

Mom finally calmed down a bit as she gently patted Lorraine's hand. The awkward atmosphere between them started to ease a little.

"I know. I don't need you to take care of me. I just want you two to be happy and live well together," Mom said as she looked at the two of us warmly, pushing back the tears.

Watching how emotional she was, I couldn't help but think of Grandma.

"Mom, did that man threaten you when you left?" I asked.
