Wayne was still clear-headed, thanks to Nolan having explained the situation to him. Otherwise, given his old temperament, he might have impulsively agreed to their request.
But now, no matter what he said, these people refused to listen.
"Yes, we were foolish. We were scammed by those bad people. But if it weren't for Nolan, we wouldn't be in this situation now. Isn't it because of Nolan that everyone in the village is drowning in debt? If he hadn't been so hellbent on getting justice, would we have ended up like this?"
The resentment in their tone was palpable.
Wayne and Melody were furious. No matter how they spun it, these people were still blaming Nolan.
"What does Nolan have to do with this? The Village Enterprise was already bankrupt! They've been scamming you all along. Are you going to blame Nolan for that too? Should he keep losing money, giving away what he earns to you, while you insult and beat him?
"What kind of logic is that? Don't forget, Nolan didn't do anything to you. He didn't hit you or curse at you. He just left. It was the Village Enterprise that failed because of corruption. This has nothing to do with Nolan.
"That's all I have to say. But since you've come all this way, we'll treat you to a meal. Let's leave it at that. After this, you'll have to figure things out on your own. We can't help you."
With that, Wayne sat down in his chair and picked up the menu, ready to order.
