Hidden behind Zero, Lyra gulped. Why was Julian suddenly there? Had he heard her silent plea? That happened with mates, so maybe…
She cut that thought off. It was just a delusion. He did not recognise her as his mate, and he did not care what happened to her. The sooner she got rid of that part that kept expecting him to behave like a proper mate, the better. She knew better.
“Yes!” Rae cheered.
“What?” Lyra questioned, confused at what her wolf was excited about. Julian looked like he wanted to murder Zero.
“Can’t you see? He is jealous,” Rae pointed out. “If he didn’t care at all, why would he be jealous?”
Lyra could think of a thousand reasons why. A male like Julian would not take it kindly to another male touching their mate-whether they accepted her or not. She was his property, and it did not matter that he did not want her. Seeing someone else pay attention to her would still make him act all territorial and possessive.
He did not care about her, but he wanted to control her and keep her on a leash. She was his to make miserable, and absolutely no one else could make her feel any different. It was not about her–it was about Zero defying him.
She knew that Zero had been trying to protect her by faking the kiss, but obviously, Julian thought they had really kissed. And now, there was no doubt that Zero was going to be in trouble with Julian.
“I’m sorry,” she said to Zero.
He turned to look at her. “You did nothing wrong. I’ll handle him.”
And then, giving her hand one final squeeze, he walked through the classroom towards Julian. Her concern for him bloomed, and she considered trying to explain everything to Julian. But she knew better than anyone that it would be useless. Julian never believed her. If anything, she would only make things more difficult for Zero.
“He can hide it from everyone, but he can’t fool himself,” Rae said. “He is your mate, and he cannot ignore the bond. You belong to each other, and he can’t stand it when another male is close to you.”
“Yeah right,” Lyra responded sarcastically. “I’ve had two mates and the bond has proven to be quite helpful.”
The bond had brought her nothing but pain. The only reason Devon’s actions hurt her was not because she was in love with him and pained by his betrayal. It was all because of the bond between them that kept her tied to him like a puppet. It was the same with Julian.
The bond did not mean anything to them besides being a means to control and abuse her. It gave them power over her, while it was her biggest weakness. The bond was supposed to be an amazing thing, and it was for most werewolves. But in Lyra’s case, she envied humans who were not subjected to it. It would be nice to live without a jerk Alpha or Lycan King holding her fate in his hands.
After Zero and Julian left, the principal called the class to order and the students settled in their seats.
“His Majesty had a few words for you, but it looks that he has urgent matters to deal with, so unfortunately he can’t address you,” he told the class. A few groans of disappointment arose, but the principal raised his hand and quietened them down. “As you all know, we have a special student with us today.”
His eyes landed on Lyra, and it made her want to crawl under her desk. Was that necessary? Now, dozens of dirty glares were being thrown her way.
“This Academy is open and welcome to everyone who wishes to pursue the highest level of training in our community, and I hope that you all keep that in mind,” the principal continued.
Welcome to everyone?
Most Omegas could not even step inside the palace grounds, let alone into the Royal Academy. It was by a rare opportunity that she was able to attend, and the other students had already shown her exactly how unwelcome she was.
“Do not cause any trouble for Lyra, and if anyone does, please let me know,” the principal told her. “We do not condone indiscipline in this school.”
The students said nothing, no longer eager to bully her. After seeing what happened with Zero, none of them wanted to take the risk. If she was with Zero, anyone who bullied her would be going up against the royal family.
No wonder she had gotten admittance to the Royal Academy!
Even after the principal left, nobody tried to say anything nasty to Lyra. Eventually, the classes began. Her classmates had gone from ridiculing to ignoring her, and Lyra was grateful for the peace. If everyday was like this, she would have a great time at the school and learn as much as she could.
After the final class before lunch, however, one of the females approached her. She smiled at Lyra and held her hand out for a shake. “Hi. My name is Beryl from the Beaver Pack.”
“So, I think I should give you a heads up about some of the people here,” Beryl told her a while later.
“Yes please,” Lyra told her. “Most of them are strangers to me, but they hate me like they know me. Wouldn’t hurt to know who it is I’m pissing off.”
“This year, the number of trainees are fewer than usual,” Beryl informed her. “But the ones attending all have high statuses and come from powerful packs around. The most popular is Zero, and there’s also Alpha Claude from the Frostshadow Pack. Oh, there’s someone you should be aware of.” Beryl leaned in and lowered her voice. “Victoria from Skylark Pack has been pursuing Zero since forever! She won’t like that you and Zero are so close.”
“She can rest assured,” Lyra told her. “Alpha Zero and I are not mates. There’s nothing going on between us.”
Beryl leaned back and raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure? Everybody saw what happened between you two. Personally, I’ve never seen my cousin look at a shewolf the way he looks at you.”
Lyra’s cheeks flushed. No one had ever looked at her the way Zero did.
“He’s very kind, that’s all,” Lyra said. “He has helped me out a few times since I came to the palace.”
“That sounds exactly like Zero,” Beryl said. Her expression got a bit more serious. “By the way, you know that tonight is the full moon, right?”
Lyra nodded. “Yeah.”
“Not trying to scare you, but after training is done, don’t go outside,” Beryl told her. “On nights like these, high-ranking werewolves go after unmarked werewolves for mating during their heat cycle, and they especially target Omegas. And as you can see, there’s quite a lot of unmated wolves gathered together here.”
Lyra swallowed and nodded, understanding Beryl’s warning. It was another thing that made the life of Omegas in the kingdom miserable. They were at the mercy of more powerful wolves, and even after an attack, they could not do anything about it. It was just the way things were done. The only thing an unmarked Omega could do was stay hidden, but that wasn’t guaranteed to work when your hormones were raging and attracting every male around.
Lyra could stay hidden, but she would still go through a difficult heat cycle. Werewolves who had found their mates did not have to suffer through that, but her case was different. Sure, Julian had slept with her before, but…
She recalled the look on his face when he saw Zero ‘kissing’ her. He hated her even more now, no doubt. Yes, she had a mate, but she did not think he would be there for her when her body was wrecked by uncontrollable need.
