True to Julian's word, he released Anna and had Thea allocate her a better room in the same building Lyra was staying.
During her first days outside confinement, Anna spent most of her time with Lyra and Beryl. Since Lyra was no longer bedridden, she was able to take her on a tour of the palace grounds, helping her familiarise with everything.
At first, Anna was very happy. This was the closest she had ever come to a normal life since being captured by the witches. She had friends, she did not have to work everyday until her back ached, and there was nobody controlling her every movement.
In such an environment, it was easy to put her horrible past behind her. However, as the days went by and more people became aware of her presence, rumours started spreading about her origin.
The truth of her identity and background became common knowledge, subjecting her to vicious rumours and discrimination from those around her.
At first, she tried her best to ignore it. She could not control what people said or thought about her. All that mattered was that the Lycan King had given her another chance to be a part of the werewolf community. She also had good friends in Lyra and Beryl, who treated her with kindness and sincerity. It was more than she could ever have hoped for, and she was not going to let a few sour stares ruin it.
It was with this mindset that she attended her first banquet at the palace. It was a banquet where many nobles were gathered, with only the most important figures in the kingdom invited.
Anna was surprised when Beryl told her that she could go with her. She was happy to get a chance to experience such a grand occasion–most werewolves never got such an opportunity. However, her happiness soon dissipated as it became clear that the nobles knew who she was and they did not like it.
“What is His Majesty thinking, allowing a traitor like her to stay at the palace?” one male wondered while staring blatantly at Anna, not bothering to hide his contempt. “For all we know, she could be a spy sent by the witches.”
Anna turned away to move away from him, but he was not the only one with something to say.
“I heard she is a witch herself. This is like inviting an enemy into our base. Ridiculous!”
“She must have bewitched the king,” someone else said. “Why else would he allow her to stay?”
“Disgusting. If I'd known someone like her would be here, I would not have attended!”
The hall was full of people who glared at her and spoke such harsh words, and in the end, Anna left and went back to her room. She had known that people were saying horrible things about her, but hearing it herself and seeing the clear hate in their eyes hit too close. It reminded her of all the taunting and bullying she underwent at the witches' camp. At least here, no one was physically assaulting her.
After that incident, Anna decided to not dwell on it and focus on positive things. Since her release from the secret room, she had been trying to get closer to Zero. But he always seemed to be able to avoid her. So, taking matters into her own hands, she asked Thea to put her in charge of delivering his food and taking care of his room.
She asked around and found out his favourite foods, and the next morning, she prepared him breakfast and took it to his suite. She even woke up extra early to bake him fresh bread.
When he opened the door, she gave him a bright smile. “Good morning, Alpha Zero. Your breakfast is here.”
He paused, clear surprise in his eyes at her appearance. “What are you doing?” he asked in an annoyed tone.
“I made your breakfast,” she told him. “I heard that you like gingerbread, so I baked a fresh batch for you. Would you like to try? I have also prepared–”
“Leave it on the table,” he said gruffly, turning around and walking back into the room. He disappeared through the door to his bathroom, leaving her alone.
