When Julian woke up, he found himself in a sterile room with white walls. It was filled with the stench of disinfectant and medicine.
When he tried moving his body, he realised that his limbs were strapped to the bed, restricting his movements. He turned his head to look around, but the room was empty. He lifted his head to check his wound. His torso was wrapped with bandages, so he could not see anything.
He lay back and tried to recall what had happened. The last thing he remembered was being in the dungeon with Nile and Lyra. When he recalled the deal Lyra had made with Nile, he shut his eyes in regret.
A sudden sound made him open his eyes just in time to see someone walk into the room. Julian was surprised to see that it was the royal healer, Spencer.
“You are finally awake,” Spencer said, moving to the bedside table and placing a metallic tray carrying various medical items there. “How are you feeling?”
“Spencer?” Julian called his name in disbelief. “Do you know who you are working for?”
“My duty is to heal you,” Spencer told him.
“Wow,” Julian said with a scoff. “When did you switch sides? Or have you always been his spy?”
“I did what I had to do to survive,” Spencer told him.
“So you betrayed your kingdom to save yourself,” Julian summarised. He could not believe it. Spencer had been the royal healer for decades and had started working in that capacity while Julian was still a little boy. Julian had always seen him as part of his family. He never would have guessed that Spencer would betray the royal family so easily.
“I'm just a doctor,” Spencer told him. “It's not like I have any royal secrets to share. My job is to save lives, and I can save them anywhere.”
“So much for loyalty,” Julian said.
“My job is to tend to the king, and he is now the king,” Spencer told him. “I do not choose who to serve.”
“You sure don't,” Julian scoffed.
Spencer moved from the table and reached for Julian’s wrist, feeling for his pulse. Closing his eyes, he used his healing powers to feel Julian's energy flow. Finally, he produced a syringe and took a blood sample.
After that, he took a pen and notebook and started making notes. Sneakily, he wrote some words on his palm. When he was done, he showed it to Julian.
‘We are being monitored. They can see and hear us. I have to be careful. Don't show any reaction.’
Casually, Spencer put the notebook down and moved to Julian's feet. Pressing them with his fingers, he asked, “Do you feel anything?”
“Barely,” Julian replied.
“The poison had spread throughout your body,” Spencer let him know, “but the antidote I gave you is working. Since you remained without treatment for a long time, it might be a while before we see a big improvement.”
“Why don't you just kill me?” Julian asked, going along with Spencer's performance. “It'll make your new master trust you more.”
“He is your father,” Julian told him, “he knew you better than anyone. I'm sure he understood why you did it.”
Spencer turned to him with another syringe. Out loud, he said, “These are antibiotics to fight infections. Your immunity is very weak, so we must be careful.”
“Have you seen Lyra?” Julian asked through the mindlink.
“Yes,” Spencer replied. “She is working with him, running the palace.”
“Are there any signs that he is torturing her?” Julian asked.
“No,” Spencer replied. “He is relying on her to hide his true identity.”
Since Julian could not do anything about it, and she had been stubborn and refused to leave the palace when she had the chance, he could only hope that she would not get in trouble before she had a chance to turn on Nile.
“I'll hide my recovery progress,” Julian told Spencer, “pretend that I'm still weak for another couple of weeks. This should give me enough time to regain all my strength so that I can strike him once and for all.”
The wait would be agony, but when he finally regained his strength and power, he would kill Nile and get his kingdom and mate back.
