"I can tell you enjoyed yourself." Evelyn directed her question to her last born who was seated beside her husband. Laura's head was on her Dad's shoulder.
"Yes, mom. This is like the best birthday I've ever had." She grinned.
"I remember you saying the same thing last year." Her mom mocked, referring to her thirteenth birthday last year where they threw a huge party for her.
"I said that?" Laura frowned and her mom nodded. "Well, that means it only gets better." She concluded with a shy smile.
"Don't break my husband's shoulder, Laura. You can now go to your room and clean up." Evelyn playfully glared at her daughter who was suddenly becoming possessive of her husband. Eric and his father, Austin burst into laughter.
"Mom." She groaned "Your husband is not complaining."
"But I am." She shrugged.
"Anyway your present is in your room, on your bed to be precise. It's from your Dad and me. We hope you love it. Happy belated Birthday, Dear."
A huge smile found its way to Laura's face. She left her Dad's embrace to hug her mom. She loved her mom so much. Evelyn was witty, kind, loving, her best friend, cheerleader and partner in crime; to Laura her mom was everything. Laura remembered the first time she saw her period. She cried because she wasn't prepared for it. She saw her period at the age of nine when most of her friends were still far from puberty so she felt odd. But her mom was there to console her, motivate her and let her know there was nothing she had to be embarrassed about. Her Mom made her regain her lost confidence.
She smiled as she remembered her mom's lecture on sex and abstinence. It was still the funniest conversation she and her mom ever had.
"Thanks, mom. I love you." She whispered in her mom's ear.
"Anything for you, my love."
She pulled away from the hug and went to hug her daddy too, thanking him for the gift.
"I think I'll go upstairs to settle down so y'all can catch up." She knew her brother wanted to tell his parents about Annie and the baby. She had no doubt they will be overjoyed when Eric spills the beans.
Before Laura left for her room She hugged Eric, thanking him for the special birthday treat to Paris.
"You must be very tired, Son." Evelyn directed at Eric who was seated opposite Her and her husband.
"Kind of. I'll soon take my leave but I need to discuss something with you." He replied nervously.
He and Laura arrived about 20minutes ago. At exactly 8:41 pm. Austin sent his driver to pick them up from the airport.
"Is anything the matter?" Evelyn asked with a worried voice.
"Do you want to discuss here or we should go to my study?" Austin offered.
"Here is fine." He replied to his dad, thinking of a way to start the conversation.
They were seated in one of the living rooms downstairs. A medium-sized room painted in its finest colours and decorated with expensive furniture.
"Mom, Dad," Eric started, looking into his parents' eyes. "You will be grandparents in a couple of months."
A minute went by and no one said anything. His parents were quiet and Eric was giving them time to process everything.
Evelyn's heart was beating twice faster. She never expected this news. Eric had told her on two occasions that if there was no improvement in his condition, he would gladly adopt a baby. Not that Evelyn was not happy about her Son adopting, she would prefer her son to have his flesh and blood just like she conceived him and his three sisters.
Eric sighed, he knew his parents were thinking that he adopted a child. Not that he could blame them as he never gave them the news concerning the result of his last check-up with Doctor Myers.
"Two weeks later, I got a call from Doctor Myers who said it turned out positive and Annie was pregnant. I was so happy that I wanted the world to know about it." He said with a sad smile.
"But Myers had to talk to her first about the situation, then I got in touch with her later. We communicated via text message until she finally agreed to see me on Friday before I left for Paris."
"Sorry I kept the news away from you. I just wanted to talk to Annie first and made sure we were cool." He directed to his parents and they nodded in understanding.
"How are they?" Evelyn asked with a smile, referring to Annie and the Baby, excitement evident in her voice.
"Annie is fine, the baby is fine too. It's still very tiny and you can hardly tell she's pregnant. She's three weeks along and we will be going for her first check-up tomorrow. To make sure both mother and baby are fine.
"Congratulations my child, I'm so happy for you." Evelyn wrapped her arms around her son.
"Finally we get to see a mini-you, running around the house." Austin directed at his son who smiled back at him.
"I'm so happy too." He said to his parents.
Eric was genuinely happy he has Annie and his baby. The beautiful woman who he was starting to fall for, he knew he had to prove to her that he loves her not just because she was the mother of his baby but because she did to him what no other woman had succeeded in doing.
"I'm hoping my grandchild will spend most of his or her holiday here with us." She said excitedly as she made a mental note to order all the baby supplies she has had in her shopping cart for a very long time.
"When will you introduce us to Annie? I want to meet her." Evelyn asked.
"I'll discuss it with her mom and we will come for a visit if she's free this weekend." He said and she nodded in understanding, giving all glory to God for answered prayers. She couldn't wait to hold her grandchild in her arms and spoil him or her.
