Besides her father, no one's even entertaining this. I hear whispers in the crowd saying to lock her up and get on with it. Some people even mention exile, execution. Mr. Olcan glares at every single one, especially Coach Kenet. She clears her throat and looks away as if it wasn't her.
No one else is entertaining Suzie except Carson, who can't seem to look away from her. It's making me crazy the way he's looking at her. Like he's looking for her to prove everyone wrong. Like he actually believes her. She notices, obviously, and steps towards him. She's like, "You know me, Carson. Before you accuse me, ask around."
"What's there to ask?" Carson turns away from her.
She moves back into his line of vision. "Ask the person who received the orders for the formation who gave it to them in the first place."
He shakes his head. "We just did. He said it was you."
She shakes her head. "Ask again. Ask who put it in their hands. Ask something that-"
"-makes you look innocent." I glare at her. Who's buying this?
She narrows her eyes at me. "I was gonna say reveals the truth, but that works too."
I grab Carson's arm, trying to make him give me his hand. Trying to get him to move away from her because they're just too close to each other for my preference. I'm tired of this. I want her gone and I want her gone now. Maybe not murder, but she needs to go.
As if sensing this, Suzie moves even closer to Carson and touches his other arm, the one I don't currently have possession of. It might've been an innocent gesture from anyone else, but something in me snaps when I see her do it. The disrespect.
I lose my mind when he doesn't pull away. Instead he says, "We can ask again."
As if he burned me, I drop his arm. Or at least I try.
He holds onto my hand before I can let him go completely. "Mia?" he turns to me, pulling away from her grasp.
I give him a firm look and I say in a voice I never thought could come out of me, "Let. Me. Go."
For the first time in his life, Carson listens immediately. I think that makes me even more mad. I walk past him and Aiden and move to the far left side of Axel.
Carson follows of course. "What's wrong? Why are you acting like this all of a sudden?" He looks to his brothers, but they give him disapproving looks.
