Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 109

"Don't speak over me," Axel says. There's no anger in his voice, no hostility, but the force in it is undeniable. He's very upset, and the room falls silent accordingly.

He turns back to me. "Mia."

I nod to show him I'm listening.

"You have to be with someone at all times. Either one of us," he gestures towards his brothers. "Or any one of our betas, Krys, Ms. Kenet, or Ms. Baines."

At that, people around the room look shocked. Especially Mr. Sanchez. "Are those the only people you trust?"

Axel doesn't pay them any attention. "You can never be alone or alone with anyone else in the pack no matter what they say. And if anyone ever makes you feel uncomfortable, or if you feel like something's wrong, don't brush it off. You have to tell us." He sounds so serious.

Then it dawns on me. This is serious.

I knew that of course, but it just hits me all of a sudden. Everyone looks so upset, and even worse, now a lot of people feel like they aren't trusted which is another reason for them to hate me. Another reason for problems to pop up in the pack, and you know what? I don't have time for that, or extra money for more pepper spray, or the energy for another pack meeting. So even though it feels like everyone's already talking, I start talking. I look up at Axel and say, "No."

He furrows his brow, and that's when Aiden finally says something. "What do you mean no? You want to be murdered?"

I wave my hand. "No, that's not what I meant." I take a deep breath and try to focus on expelling coherent words. "I get that the safety precautions are necessary and I need to be careful, I'm all for that. But it's not completely true that you can't trust your pack."

I don't look at the annoying elders, or the somewhat questionable advisors. I look at the brothers, yes all of the brothers, and my friends, the betas. "Today an old man that didn't want anything to do with me was the one who rescued me from a potential napper. That guard over there, I just realized he's the one who was nice to me when he didn't need to be, when Brittany and Krys were showing me around. And a guy I used to be scared of..." I look at Onai.

He gives me a flat look, which makes me smile a little harder because I know that's just him. "He saved me at his own expense and now I trust him with my life. I didn't expect that at all, so what I'm trying to say is..." I look down at my hands, no longer wanting to make awkward eye contact with anyone in the room. "Maybe some people in the pack are surprising you, but they've been surprising me too, and not always in a bad way." Even if it has mainly been in a bad way.
