Mia gawks at him. "This isn't the topic I approved. I thought we'd be discussing my responsibilities!"
"Now you know how I felt when you accused me of trying to kill you!" Suzie jabs a finger in her face.
Mia smacks her hand away. "Are you still on that?"
"Anyway." Suzie keeps talking. "Each one of us corresponds to a specific division. Dante is Mia's beta for Labor and Defense..."
Carson looks at Dante. For a second, I think he'll run for his life.
"... I'm the beta for Domestic Affairs..." Suzie says.
I give her a wary look.
"... and Michael is the beta for Executive and International Affairs... Speaking of, I vote for that name to change. It's terrible."
Michael nods. "I second it, so the decisions final."
Aiden can't even look at him. "The day I have to work with you, Michael, is the day I die."
"Do you wanna be cremated today or...?" Michael starts.
Aiden's eyes fly open. Geez. I've never seen that kind of reaction.
Suzie keeps talking in a cheerful tone, completely unaffected by the chaos around her, "Naturally I'll maintain my position as key advisor."
"Oh. Naturally," Bri mocks.
My eyes wander from Dante's confusion to Mia's disbelief. Michael's smugness to Suzie's satisfaction. All four of them are sitting on the other side of the table, and I'm shocked to see my own beta, right there with them. He's sitting as calm as a cucumber.
Has he no shame? I give him a disappointed look, because he's the last person I'd expect this from.
He raises an eyebrow. He follows my gaze, realizing what I'm noticing. "Oh. No, I'm not a part of this." He gestures towards the others.
"Oh yes you are." Michael gives him a look.
"... No." Onai looks away.
Michael gestures between the two of them, raising an eyebrow.
Onai gives him a bored look. I don't think he's trying to be rude. He just doesn't seem to understand what that gesture means... or care.
Michael glares at him. "It hurts to say this, but you're banished to the other side of the table."
Onai keeps eating his food, unphased.
"That's enough," Mia yells over her brother's attempts to get rid of Onai and Suzie's Demand Number 27: The royal guards can outvote both the alphas, betas, and luna without question.
"This wasn't what we were supposed to be talking about," Mia growls.
