Freya spoke politely, but Aiden–standing just behind her–wanted to roll his eyes. When did I become a helpful, eager little boy“? Why am I just now hearing about this? He didn’t even like playing with girls. They either cried at the drop of a hat or were too aggressive. Playing with other boys was way more fun–straightforward and to the point.

“Thank you so much,” Sophia said with a smile, then gave Summer’s hand a tug. “Summer, didn’t you say you wanted to play with Aiden? Look, he’s right here. Say hi!”

Summer pouted. She didn’t really want to say hi. But before coming here, her aunt had told her that if she didn’t make friends with this boy named Aiden, she wouldn’t get any more gifts or snacks. So for the sake of presents, she had to play along.

“Hi, Aiden. Hello, Ma’am.”

Uh… Freya froze awkwardly for a moment before gently correcting her. “I’m not Aiden’s mom. I’m his uncle’s wife. You can call me Ms. Freya.”

At the phrase ‘uncle’s wife‘, Sophia’s grip on Summer’s hand involuntarily tightened.

“Ow! Auntie, that hurts!” Summer yelped.

“Oh? Sorry, Summer. Auntie’s just excited you’re starting to make new friends at your new school.” Sophia quickly smoothed it over and shifted the subject. “Why don’t you and Aiden go play? Auntie needs to chat with Ms. Stone for a bit.”

Aiden had zero desire to play with Summer, but Freya shot him a look, signaling him to be a good sport. She even patted his head.

“Fine…” he muttered reluctantly. With no other choice, Aiden went off to play with the girl he didn’t like at all. And soon realized–she didn’t want to play with him either.

“I don’t even want to play with you! My aunt told me I had to!”

Aiden dropped the act and rolled his eyes. “You think I wanna play with you? I don’t even know who you are. A girl like you wouldn’t have even gotten close to me before.”

“I’m not scared of you! It’s just my aunt who thinks I’m scared! I don’t want to play with you! I just transferred here, and I’ll have tons of friends!”

Summer huffed, cheeks puffed out in frustration. It was all his fault her aunt had threatened to withhold her snacks and gifts. She hated this annoying boy!
