“If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be living like this! Our profits got cut in half–how is that not his fault?” the woman said righteously, as if she had every reason to complain.

Freya laughed coldly. “If it weren’t for Louis, Graham Corp would’ve been barely limping along long ago. Your dividends would’ve dropped by at least two–thirds. Even when the company was transferred later, he still made sure your family’s interests were properly protected. And here you are, running your mouth without an ounce of shame. I guess you’ve gotten so used to living off others that you’ve forgotten what the word ‘dignity‘ even means.”

The woman’s face turned red. That smothered anger flared right back up, and she raised her hand, ready to hit Freya.

But Freya caught her wrist mid–air before it got anywhere close. Still smiling sweetly, she held it firmly in place.

“Angry, huh? Well, that won’t get you far. People who can actually accomplish things–do you see them throwing tantrums every day? Let me give you a little advice. What goes around comes around. Just because Louis is down now doesn’t mean he won’t rise again. Don’t go thinking life is as simple as a TV drama or a romance novel. Reality’s a bit more complicated than that.”

“You’re absolutely right, Freya!” Aiden’s voice popped in as he came walking over with a tray. He plunked two bowls of pasta down on the table and turned to the woman. “It’s already noon, and our family’s not exactly rolling in money these days. You’re not still planning on mooching a meal off us, are you?”

“Aiden, you-”

“Hold it. You don’t get to call me that. That’s what my uncle and Freya call me. You and I aren’t nearly close enough for that. And by the way, who knows what really happened with my parents‘ car accident? You lot haven’t exactly cleared yourselves of suspicion.”
