But Louis wasn’t the kind of person who’d do something and not own up to it. “I did keep my guard up in the beginning. But later, no–1 just didn’t bring it up because it hadn’t succeeded yet.”

He figured that was more than enough explanation. In the past, he’d never felt the need to explain anything to anyone outside of his closest friends. But to Freya, it just sounded like he couldn’t be bothered to tell her anything.

Of course. She wasn’t his anything. Even the original character he was married to had just been his wife in name. She’d once spent his money and lived in his house–what right did she have to question his business? And as for her, a stranger who had crossed into this world–she had even less right.

When it came down to it, had they ever truly had a relationship? Even living under the same roof, they were really just two people who occasionally shared a meal. She didn’t know a thing about his life. She didn’t know a thing about his work. There had never been any real connection between them.

That’s life. It looks equal on the surface, but there are always invisible hands placing everyone in their “proper” place. People might seem close, but really, they’re on different tracks–never intersecting, never touching. Just parallel lines, moving Jalongside each other but never meeting.

Freya had understood this truth long ago: in life, the only person you can truly rely on is yourself. No matter how close someone else seems–be it your parents, your spouse, your children–sooner or later, they will leave. If you don’t want to end up heartbroken, the safest choice is to never hand over your heart to anyone.

The food came quickly. Freya shoved all her messy thoughts aside and cheerfully called Louis to eat. “Come on, dig in! Took us forever to find a place to eat. It’s rare for me to treat someone, so don’t hold back. I know you’ve had plenty of fancy meals, but this one’s unique–because I’m paying. Doesn’t happen often! I’m a total cheapskate.”
