“It’s nothing. Just thinking that life’s not easy, so I should work harder.” Freya gave a perfunctory answer, then picked up her juice with proper form. “Come on, we haven’t even toasted yet. Here’s to your upcoming comeback–and to my novel getting
sold.”
And to the fact that even though we’ve leaned on each other all this time, we’ll be lucky enough to part ways like strangers in the end.
Louis picked up his glass. The two of them clinked in the air and each took a sip.
For Louis, this kind of experience was new. He would occasionally meet up with his best friends, and food and drinks were part of the usual. When a business venture succeeded, he’d celebrate with his team. But because people knew he didn’t like getting too close to outsiders, not many would dare crowd around him.
Having a one–on–one celebration like this? That was a first. But honestly, it didn’t feel bad at all.
“When business picks up, I’ll treat you to a proper fancy dinner,” Louis said casually, though in truth it was a sincere promise. It was his way of thanking her for her companionship during this time, and for how well she’d looked after Aiden. She hadn’t done anything major, but he still appreciated it.
Freya responded just as casually, “Sounds good. I’ll be waiting for that real fancy dinner then.”
