With the lady of the house gone and the man of the house stingy enough to lie through his teeth, there wasn’t much a mere employee like him could say.
“Louis, you’ve really fallen hard,” Derek said, unable to hold it in as he glanced–again and again–at the lone, sad little packet of cookies sitting nearby while he drove. Finally, he asked, “What exactly is it about Ms. Stone that’s got you hooked?”
“Are the cookies good?” Louis didn’t answer the question directly; he asked one instead.
“They’re not bad,” Derek admitted–Freya’s cookies were actually quite good.
“Then why can’t they shut you up?”
It had been a long time since Louis had stabbed him with a line like that. Derek fell silent. Forget I said anything.
Back at home, Freya was having the time of her life. With a face mask on, she eagerly launched her game, then queued up a movie while the game ran in the background. These past few days, she’d been grinding out chapters during the day and Amaking desserts at night–basically like holding down a full–time job. She’d built up a whole stockpile of drafts.
She wouldn’t need to write anything for the next few days; today, she was giving herself a vacation, and nobody was going to
stop her.
But she’d only made it halfway through her movie when Louis called. “Aiden’s school got canceled today out of the blue–he should be coming back”
Perfect. Her day of solitude was ruined. Still smiling, Freya nodded, “Alright, I’ll stay in this morning
An hour later, Derek dropped Aiden off. He didn’t stay long, as soon as the kid was inside, he took off. But the way he looked at Freya before leaving was strange–just as she was about to ask, he’d already bolted.
“I’m dying here did you miss me?” Aiden stepped through the door and threw his arms around Freya.
Of course she’d missed him, she’d taken care of him for a while now. Freya gave him a big hug right back. “What do you think? You stayed at school for so long this time was it tiring”
“It wasn’t too bad. Lucky for us, our project wrapped up early, or we’d have to stay even longer like the other teams. The food over there was awful, and the teachers kept insisting it was to help us ‘experience life. It was miserable.” Aiden vented while changing his clothes.
“One of the teachers kept grilling me about my uncle too. Hmph, I didn’t even have to guess–it was clearly because they heard about the VR MMO launch and wanted to cozy up to me to score an early access pass. I told them everyone would be able to play soon, but they didn’t believe me. They really thought my uncle was as useless as they are.”
“Weren’t you all supposed to be doing a children’s tech experience program? That teacher isn’t one of your regular ones. right?”
“Nope. But all the teachers there were tech enthusiasts. As soon as they heard the VR MMO was going public, they got worked up–you’d think they were witnessing a miracle. A few even started talking about wanting to work at my uncle’s company.”
Aiden looked helpless. “But the fact that they’re teaching us elementary school kids instead of college students already says something about their abilities. The folks working for my uncle? At the very least, they’re grad students from top universities. These teachers don’t even come close. Talking to me won’t get them anywhere, but I still had to come up with reasons that wouldn’t hurt their pride. It was so hard.”
“This really isn’t something a kid should have to deal with. Next time you run into something like that, just say you don’t know, you don’t understand, you have no idea. If they think you’re clueless, they’ll stop pestering you.”
Freya sighed. “Then go ahead and wear yourself out.”
“Hehe.” Aiden, now in his pajamas, giggled as he jumped into Freya’s arms and hugged her waist, acting all cutesy. “I want something yummy.”
