That evening, Louis noticed dinner was unusually lavish. “What’s going on? Is today some kind of special occasion!”

“It’s not exactly a special day, but I did get some good news–I’ll be joining a production crew the day after tomorrow. I’m officially going to be a real screenwriter! Isn’t that amazing? Freya beamed as she spoke,

“It is amazing” Louis felt a sudden pang in his chest; the first image that flashed through his mind was of himself alone at home. Still, he didn’t let it show on his face. “Where is it?”

“Just in the neighboring city. 111 buy some things and get ready tomorrow; then I’ll take a bus there in the afternoon. I’ll prep everything here at home in advance–snacks and stuff for you–after that, you’ll have to handle your own meals.”“

Freya thought she was being pretty thoughtful. Look at that she was not only tidying up the house before leaving, she was even making snacks for the boss. Where else could he find such a considerate roommate?

“Then where am I supposed to eat?”

Louis asked it so naturally that for a split second, Freya felt like she was abandoning him–like he’d have nothing to eat if she left. Fortunately, her head was still clear.

“Don’t you guys have a cafeteria? Worst case, just have Derek pick something up for you.”

“Alright.” That simple word sounded so forlorn, it actually made Freya feel a twinge of guilt.

But her mind was perfectly fine, and her reasoning sound. If Louis was going to feel this lost just because he got used to her cooking, then it only meant she’d been doing too much before. Sooner or later, he’d have to get used to days without her meals; in that sense, going off to work on set might actually be a good thing.

Still, since he was taking it so personally, the least she could do was be a bit busier tomorrow morning and leave him more food.

“Well, if you really don’t want to eat out, I’ll make a few things that’ll keep–like tacos or buns. I’ll even make a list, so whenever you’re hungry, you can just heat them up.”

Only then did Louis’s expression ease. “Alright.”

Freya felt great–floating on cloud nine, even. She was already thinking about how to hone her skills on set and really grow her career. She didn’t notice that the man sitting across from her at the table had a completely blank expression on his face.

Though honestly, even if she had noticed, she probably wouldn’t have cared. If you didn’t look closely, it was hard to tell the difference between Louis’s usual face and his blank one; most people couldn’t spot it anyway.

The next day. Louis didn’t go to work. While Freya was busy in the kitchen, he stood by the doorway watching her–and Boccasionally chiming in with a request here or there, driving her a little crazy.

“You’re putting in that many eggs for the meatballs? They’ll come out super soft when fried–you sure about this?” Freya was already losing her patience but still gave him an honest warning.

“It’s fine–soft is tasty.”

First, he rattled off a list of taco fillings–ground beef with radish slaw, pulled pork with cabbage, grilled chicken with celery and mushrooms, scrambled eggs with chives. Then he moved on to meatballs–stuff like veggie–packed ones with shredded carrots and eggs, or mushroom blends with herbs.

total hodgepodge. Freya felt like in her entire life, she’d never cooked so many different types of dishes in one day.

But it didn’t stop there. Just as she’d finally finished frying the last batch of meatballs, the boss announced he wanted dessert

“I heard from Derek that you’re not usually into sweets?” Freya remembered it clearly–Derek had once said, “Louis doesn’t like sweets much. Back when I used to get him food, he rarely wanted anything sugary
