Freya thought the crew members were quite considerate–unlike previous productions where she’d had to resort to extreme measures to avoid forced toasts.
Thomas beside her and Jasper across the room took note of this exchange, filing it away for future reference. Oblivious, Freya continued eating until the gathering ended.
Since the restaurant was on the hotel’s ground floor, there was no need for farewells. Freya followed the group upstairs and returned to her room.
Full and content, she sat on the bed for a while before turning on some music and gathering her things for a shower.
Though she hadn’t drunk any alcohol, the lingering scent from dinner clung to her clothes, making her grimace.
Just as she was about to head to the bathroom, her phone rang. She walked back and picked it up–the screen displayed a single name: Louis
Thinking he might have something urgent, Freya answered quickly, “Hello? What’s up?”
The question gave Louis pause, as if she assumed he wouldn’t call without a reason. He steadied his tone. “Are you Have you met the crew?”
settled in!
Since her arrival, she’d only sent me a single text–I’m here–and then radio silence. Now it was past ten, and I finally couldn’t hold back. Lunch had been a rushed meal in my office, dinner a quick bite outside. Back home, Baylon had called with questions, leading to an hour- long discussion. After hanging up and finishing my work, I turned to find the house engulfed in darkness
It hit me then no one else was home. That is why the bedroom door s stood open. With no movement or sound, why bother closing it?
The electric kettle sat empty. No laptop on the coffee table. The familiar clatter of keyboard keys was absent. The emptiness of the house pressed in, an unfamiliar and unwelcome sensation.
This shouldn’t feel strange. I’d always lived alone, whether during school or after starting work. Even in the villa, toith three staff members present, our quiet presence had been easy to ignore. It had never bothered me before.
“Everything’s fine.” Freya said, settling onto the plush hotel sofa. Her gaze drifted to the dimly lit studio lot outside the window. “We had a crew dinner tonight. Everyone seems nice, but it’s hard to tell much yet. Zane was kind enough to introduce me to everyone–probably because I’m the original author.”
She paused. “What about you? With the game launching soon, is everything on track?”
“It’s going smoothly. Louis hesitated before adding, “Call me morning and night when you’re away. Be careful out there.” The request caught Freya off guard.
Then again, I’m still Technically his wife. By all rights, we should be each other’s closest family. Though our marriage isn’t real, we are at least friends–maybe even something akin to family. His concern made sense.
She doubted Louis would actually monitor her daily, especially with the VR MMO launch keeping him busy. But since he’d expressed worry, she’d honor the sentiment.
