Blair Kingston took the meal that Kendrick handed over and grinned. “Alright, I believe it now. Mr. Kendrick isn’t just good at making an entrance–he’s smooth with words too.”

Everyone laughed, and just like that, the topic moved on. Whatever anyone else thought, they ate well that evening–and walked away with a much better impression of Kendrick and Freya.

Back at the hotel, Kendrick had booked a room on the same floor as Freya. Once he got in,

“Louis, Freya’s doing fine. Mr. Zane and the crew have been treating her well. I bought milk tea for everyone on set–kind of a subtle way to let them know who she really is. I don’t think anyone’s dumb enough to cross her now, unless they’ve got a death wish and want to mess with both of us.”

Kendrick sighed. He hadn’t had to check in with someone like this since he was twelve. But for Louis and his love life, he was going all in.

“I’ll upgrade your new car to the premium package,” Louis said smoothly, lounging in his chair and glancing out the window.

“Seriously?” Kendrick perked up immediately. That upgrade alone was worth at least seventy grand. Not that he couldn’t afford it, but with his finances currently tight, he’d been debating it for weeks. “Louis, you’re the best. You always have my back.” Without even waiting to be asked, Kendrick rattled off everything he’d noticed. “Freya’s adjusting really well. The food’s average, but she eats with the crew without complaining. She just grabs some bread at night if she gets hungry. The crew’s okay–nobody’s dumb enough to stir up trouble. That Thomas guy might’ve had something in mind, but he’s backed off. Jasper–the lead–probably had a few ideas too, but I’m pretty sure those are gone now. The lead and supporting actresses? They’ve been playing nicely with Freya. They’re not dumb. And the rest of the team? No one’s got a reason to start anything with her.” He added, “Pretty sure Mr. Zane gave a heads- up to the right people about who she really is. Everyone’s been treating her with respect. And Freya? She’s sharp. Maybe not quite on Daniel’s level yet, but she’s miles ahead of any newbie. She can definitely hold her own.”

“She really is talented,” Louis said, even though he didn’t know the details. But in front of Kendrick, he had no problem acknowledging it.

“Exactly. And she’s serious about it, too. I watched her all afternoon–barely took a break. That notebook of hers is packed with notes. It’s all useful, detailed stuff. She’s the type who, once she commits, gives it everything she’s got.”

They chatted a while longer. Kendrick, feeling satisfied, finally hung up and went off to shower, humming to himself.

Back in her room, Freya sat with some bread and fruit, scrolling through Twitter for updates on the holographic game. And, of course, waiting for Louis to call.

After eating, his call came through.

She answered with a smile, “Thanks for sending Kendrick over to back me up.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” Louis replied, his voice warm. “Isn’t it my job to make sure you’re taken care of? What kind of husband would let his wife get pushed around?”
