Chapter 260 Truth or Dare?
One time, he happened to walk into her room and noticed that even though Jasmine claimed she was studying for grad school exams, there weren’t many textbooks in sight. What drew his attention instead were the quiet traces of something else–neatly arranged tools, handwritten notes in careful script, and a faint, unfamiliar scent in the air.
Eventually, Waylon couldn’t contain his curiosity and asked about it. That was when he learned her family followed certain old traditions–rituals and practices passed down through generations, steeped in ancient philosophy.
Suddenly, all the strange things about her made sense. But instead of satisfying his curiosity, it only deepened it.
At the time, Waylon still didn’t realize–curiosity was the first step toward falling hard.
He once asked Jasmine if ghosts and spirits really existed. She replied calmly, “Respect them but keep your distance. They might just be lifeforms from another dimension–ones humanity hasn’t discovered yet.
Then he found out she was actually working with a special department. As for what she did exactly, he had no idea.
Their relationship really changed one night when Waylon, feeling cocky, decided not to drive home. On his way back near the entrance of his apartment complex, a group of men surrounded him. By pure chance, Jasmine was coming home too–and swooped in like a force of nature to save him.
Clad in all white, sharp and graceful, every movement swift and decisive–her figure seared itself into Waylon’s memory. A dozen mén couldn’t lay a finger on one young woman. Even they were stunned, before turning tail and running.
People always said it was dangerous when a hero saved a damsel in distress–but when the beauty saves the hero, it hits just as hard.
Especially when the beauty wasn’t just any beauty, but one completely untouched by worldly
concerns.
Waylon admitted it, he was just an ordinary guy. He’d been attracted to Jasmine’s looks from the start. But he wasn’t dumb enough to act on it blindly. Now, with his heart moved by more than just her appearance, he realized he was in deep.
Unfortunately, when he carefully tested the waters and asked about relationships, he was hit

with a bombshell–Jasmine planned to take over the Miller family, and that meant she’d never get married.
The blow hit fast and hard, like a tornado. Waylon confirmed several times she wasn’t joking. Then he was left stewing, tossing the idea around in his head over and over again, trying to figure out what to do.
He knew full well he wasn’t important enough to make someone give up their life’s purpose. In the end, he could only tell himself to let go.
But feelings weren’t something people could just control. Especially not when this was the first time in years he’d truly fallen for someone.
He tried to stop thinking about her–but couldn’t help eavesdropping every time Mathilda mentioned something about Jasmine. His attention always drifted back to her.
That last shred of self–restraint snapped the moment he saw Jasmine with some guy he didn’t recognize one who was clearly flirting, even if he tried to play it cool. Heat rushed to Waylon’s head, and a sharp wave of anger roared through him. Why was it that the first time in my life I really liked someone, I had to give up without even trying? Why couldn’t Jasmine lake over the Miller family and still get married? Why was I just supposed to accept that Jasmine would never consider me–never even think about a path where we could both have what we wanted? I’d never interfere with her work–wasn’t that enough?
Fueled by a stubborn refusal to give up, Waylon finally made a decision, he’d fight for her. Even if he couldn’t win her heart in the end, he’d still be content just protecting her.
He’d never felt this way about anyone–and probably never would again. If she wasn’t getting married, then fine. He’d stay unmarried too. He’d spend his whole life by her side.
After that, Waylon truly started caring for Jasmine in every possible way–quietly, thoroughly. But he never dared confess how he felt. He knew Jasmine’s temperament well. The moment she found out, she’d pack up and move out for sure.
You have to stay close to have a chance. If she moved away, how would I keep building goodwill? How would I fight for myself? But just when everything seemed to be going right, he never imagined that one night of drunkenness would blow his secret wide open.
That’s what led to the disaster, the next morning, sobering up and seeing Jasmine’s packed luggage in the living room, Waylon realized with horror just how badly he’d screwed up. He tried calling her, but she didn’t pick up.
