Card tricks like this weren’t exactly unheard of. Baylon and Kendrick had heard of them before. But no one had ever dared perform them in front of them. And this was Freya, after all. Who would ever think she was capable of pulling something like that?

Even Louis found it a bit odd. From what Freya had said before, she’d had a fairly happy childhood. But this? This wasn’t something an average kid would pick up just for fun.

“What’s so strange about it?” Freya gathered the cards back together and started shuffling them with the ease and flash of a professional. Her hands moved so swiftly and skillfully it looked like something out of a movie about gambling prodigies.

“My grandpa used to love playing cards when I was little. When he had nothing else to do, he’d call me over and teach me how to catch people cheating. I was bored, so I figured, why not learn how to cheat too? Honestly, it was way more fun than playing with clay. Definitely more fun than dolls. One thing led to another, and I ended up with this little hobby.”

One thing led to another? That sounded way too casual.

Kendrick and Baylon thought back to the way they’d been questioning their own eyes just now. The fact that Freya called it a little hobby made it all feel kind of surreal.

“Your grandpa liked playing cards?” Louis focused on something else entirely.

“Yeah. He was really into it when he was young. But not in the way you’re thinking. He wasn’t gambling–he was just fascinated by the mechanics of card games. He even sought out experts to learn from. After he got good, he became something of a card master himself. But the way he played was way different from normal people.”

Freya chuckled at the memory. “One of his favorite things to do was compete with others to see who could cheat better–who could do it without being caught. If he were still alive and sitting here today, you guys would’ve been toast. You wouldn’t even know how you lost. He could cheat right in front of your eyes and you’d never notice.”

Baylon swallowed hard, eyes wide. “Freya, you’re already crazy good. If we hadn’t seen it with our own eyes, we’d never have guessed you were cheating

Kendrick wasn’t focused on that. He scooted closer to her, clapped his hands together, then folded them in a begging gesture. “Freya, c’mon. We’re good friends, right? Teach me a couple tricks! Whatever makeup or clothes you want, I’ll get it for you!”

And the very next second, Baylon was giving him a look of pity. Kendrick hadn’t even figured out what that look was for when he suddenly felt a strong tug at the back of his collar. He was yanked away from Freya and shoved back into his seat.

Turning around, he saw that the one who’d grabbed him was–of course–Louis.

Baylon silently mouthed, serves you right. Really? He just had to get that close to Freya? Was he trying to make Louis jealous? And what was with the puppy eyes? At least Baylon had the sense to sit still and keep it classy.
