Seeing was one thing. Understanding was another. But their hands still wouldn’t cooperate.
For the first time, Freya realized these two weren’t exactly the sharpest tools in the shed. She had no choice but to break the moves down step by step until they could barely manage a decent attempt.
Meanwhile, Louis sat off to the side, watching them learn.
They were getting into it when an utterly indescribable voice suddenly cut through the room.
“Well, well. Haven’t seen you two in a while, and now you don’t even know how to play cards anymore? Gotta have a woman teach you? Seems like you’re really sliding backward in life.”
Freya paused and turned toward the voice–only to be greeted by an unbelievably flamboyant man.
He had an extremely feminine face, but that wasn’t the most eye–catching part. What really stood out was his outfit: tight red pants and a leather jacket. In a room full of understated black and white, he was a blazing red flower–impossible to ignore.
“Ha! I was wondering who it was,” Kendrick said, hands still moving as he played, “turns out it’s you, peacock. Can’t say we’re great at cards, but you? We do know your card skills suck.”
“Come on,” he went on, “everyone knows Elmer lost seven million at a casino and got Madam Cynthia scrambling to cover the debt.”
Freya hadn’t even finished trying to place this man when Baylon chimed in. He bumped Kendrick on purpose.
“Don’t be mean now. Elmer’s had it rough–ignored by his family, no talent, chasing fortune like a madman. We should all have a little more empathy, y’know? Be understanding.”
Kendrick gave a mock slap to his own left hand, dramatically gasping, “You’re right, you’re right. That was uncalled for. I shouldn’t be so harsh. Not everyone’s born with a gift for business. Sigh… I’ve just been too successful lately–it’s made me arrogant. I’ll reflect. I’m reflecting.”
Freya had never met ei out who this flamboyant man was. Probably someone the original
Still, Freya hadn’t
Freya had never met either. But it was her first time seeing someone so brazenly disrespect Kendrick and Baylon–especially with Louis sitting right there, and this guy didn’t even seem to care about offending him.

“Heh, keep running your mouths,” Elmer said, his tone laced with disdain. “Word is your dear big brother’s neck–deep in trouble these days, and you’re all just here playing cards? So much for brotherly loyalty.”
Then his gaze finally landed on Freya. He blinked in surprise.
“Whoa–who’s this beauty? How come I’ve never seen you before? Not bad. You guys really have some hidden treasures around here, huh? Lucky dogs.”
“Elmer, I’d be careful what you say,” Louis suddenly spoke.
His voice was so cold, it practically sliced through the air. Even Freya felt the chill–it was that icy.
Elmer froze. “Mr. Graham?”
His tone, without him even realizing, had softened considerably. All the arrogance from earlier was gone.
Freya was speechless. So he hadn’t seen Louis sitting there?
Thinking about it, it made sense. Elmer had entered from behind Louis–just outside his line of sight. No wonder she thought he was being deliberately disrespectful. Turns out, he just didn’t see him.
But now that he realized what he’d said, Elmer immediately panicked. He didn’t mind sparring with Kendrick and Baylon–he’d been doing that since they were kids–but Louis? That was a whole different beast.
So he quickly backpedaled, “Ah, this must be the famous Mrs. Graham? The noble and virtuous lady who’s stood by Mr. Graham through thick and thin?”
