Of course they were different. They actually cared about feelings–real ones. And Freya believed she was the same. If she were in that couple’s position, she would’ve focused on learning everything she could from the start. She’d never let the family business crumble just because she was unprepared, and she’d certainly never trade love for power.
The people onstage were still talking with bright smiles, but to Freya, none of it sounded real anymore. Some things just couldn’t stand up to scrutiny. Once you started looking too closely, the perfect façade was full of cracks.
When both sets of parents finally finished their speeches, the so–called happy couple took the mic and exchanged some sweet nothings. Freya thought it all sounded like empty pleasantries. She didn’t feel any real warmth between them.
She glanced over at Louis and was surprised to see him zoning out. From the outside, it probably looked like nothing–but Freya knew him well enough to catch it.
She tugged at his hand. He came back to himself, voice low and gentle. “What’s wrong?”
A few strands of her hair had fallen loose, and without thinking, Louis tucked them behind her ear. Inwardly, he gave a nod of approval to the stylist–who had done an excellent job. The look didn’t draw too much attention, but it still made Freya look elegant and poised. Subtle. Understated. And that was exactly what Louis wanted. Even though he wasn’t the jealous type, he didn’t like too many men staring at her. So yes, a rare thumbs–up to the stylist.
“Nothing,” Freya whispered with a smile. “I just wanted to hold your hand.”
“Are you tired?” Louis asked, just as quietly.
“No, not at all. I’ve just been hanging out, snacking and playing games. I’m fine.” She felt a little embarrassed. When she’d reached for him earlier, she hadn’t even thought about why. She just… wanted to.
eyes softened. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “Just a couple more minutes. Then we can head back.”
Louis’s eyes
“It’s really okay. This isn’t hard to sit through. It doesn’t have anything to do with us anyway.” Freya grinned. “I’m just here for the snacks and the fun.”
Her smile was so soft, so pink and pretty, Louis had to resist the sudden urge to kiss her. Instead, he gave a small nod. “Then have fun.”

Beside them, Kendrick couldn’t help rolling his eyes. They were standing so close that he couldn’t not hear their exchange. Even here, at this kind of event, they were still being disgustingly sweet. Honestly, if the folks onstage could hear them, the groom and bride–to- be would probably feel humiliated. That–that–was what real love looked like.
Waylon had overheard too, and his thoughts drifted far away again.
Baylon, meanwhile, was pretending to watch the stage while secretly fiddling with a deck of cards in his hand. Kendrick sensed the movement and glanced down. Sure enough–this guy was playing cards at this exact moment.
He bumped Baylon with his elbow and muttered, “Deal me in.”
Baylon casually handed over half the deck, and the two of them started playing right there, grinning like idiots. Waylon snapped back to the present and nearly laughed out loud. These two clowns really could entertain themselves anywhere.
Once the speeches wrapped up, the music started. The ballroom was officially open for dancing. Louis turned to Freya.
