Of course he was doing fine. Jasmine didn’t like him, and she wasn’t going to like anyone else! either. All that cliché drama other people ran into? That kind of stuff wasn’t happening to him. Worst case, it’d just take him a little longer to win her over. He could wait.
Freya wasn’t so sure it was that simple. But Jasmine was her friend, and Waylon was Louis’s brother. Whether Waylon liked Jasmine or Jasmine didn’t like Waylon, it wasn’t her place to say anything–let alone do anything.
She’d already gone as far as she could the last time, just to make sure things didn’t get awkward between them. Any more interference would just be overstepping. So even with all her doubts, she swallowed them down.
When they got to the front of
the venue, Freya realized something: she had no idea what this event even was. She’d just been wandering around playing cards and hanging out. Also- where was Aiden?
“Freya! Uncle Louis! You two are so mean! You came all the way up here without saying a word to me!” Just as she was wondering, a small hand grabbed hers–and came with a very familiar voice.
Well. Guess she didn’t need to go looking after all. The little guy had found her.
“You’re here now, aren’t you?” Louis gave him a sideways glance.
“That’s only because I’m sharp! Good thing I kept my eyes on you two–otherwise you would’ve left me behind!” Aiden pouted in dramatic offense.
and shut up. “If you didn’t even have that much awareness, you wouldn’t have any right to complain.”

Aiden may have gone quiet, but the people up on the makeshift stage had started talking. A young couple stood at the front, flanked by two pairs of middle–aged parents. The man in the couple was the same guy who’d been greeting guests earlier.
“Who are they?” Freya asked curiously.
“The eldest son of the Rolland family and the second daughter of the Ivory family,” explained. “They’re announcing their engagement. It’s not really anything to do wiu. us- we’re just here to show respect to the head of the Rolland family. No need to think too much about it.”

Chapter 302 Not the Same as Them
“The Rolland family that important?” Freya tried to remember if she’d ever met them.
“Not really,” Baylon answered. “But they did extend a hand when Louis was in trouble. Whether we needed it or not, it was a nice gesture. Besides, the current head of the Rolland family is pretty decent. Knows how to read the room. That carns a bit of face.”
“Thing is, Louis is busy and Quinton’s about to have surgery, so the only ones who came were us. Honestly, I didn’t think Waylon would show up–but here he is,” Kendrick added, glancing at Waylon again. He clearly still wasn’t at ease.
Waylon caught Kendrick looking and raised a brow. Kendrick immediately looked away.
On stage, the happy couple was sharing the story of their romance. The whole thing sounded so touching, even Freya found herself rooting for them. She silently wished them a long and happy life together.
And then Kendrick ruined it.
“If I didn’t already know that the Rolland guy got injured down there by some woman last month, and saw the Ivory girl strolling around with some gigolo, I might’ve actually believed their story. But people, man–can’t trust a word they say.”
“Have some tact,” Waylon said flatly. “So what if they fool around before getting married? As long as they behave after the wedding, it’s fine. And if both families are okay with it, who’s to stop them? Not everyone gets to choose their own marriage. You should feel sorry for them.”
Kendrick looked like he wanted to argue, but when he caught Waylon’s expression, he held his tongue. Must be hitting a little close to home lately.
Freya, meanwhile, felt like her whole worldview was cracking. “Wait… you’re saying they’re not in love?”
“Probably not,” Kendrick said without an ounce of hesitation. “He’s a player. She apparently already has someone she likes. It’s a business marriage. Love’s irrelevant. If they’re smart, they’ll just agree to do their own thing. So long as the money keeps flowing, who cares? They both grew up with everything handed to them–they should understand how important money is.”
Baylon chimed in, “Don’t compare them to us. These kinds of families need alliances to keep their status–and their safety. It’s a power move, not romance. That Rolland guy’s not even that capable. He’s got nothing on his old man. We’re different.”
