Marilyn’s cooking wasn’t bad, but she was far too busy today to handle dinner. Louis didn’t want Freya getting tired, and he certainly didn’t want her eating takeout again, so he called in a chef to cook at home.
“Are you catering or something?” Freya stood by the kitchen doorway, peeking her head in. “I like anything with chocolate.”
The chef, a middle–aged man, found the lady of the house rather amusing. Usually, when he cooked in private homes, the hosts never came near the kitchen. He’d never imagined a day when the mistress of the house would stand nearby, observing his every move.
And she wasn’t just idly watching–she was genuinely focused.
But cooking wasn’t something you could just learn by watching. Plus, no one from wealthy families ever chose to become a chef, so he didn’t suspect she was trying to steal his techniques. She probably just had nothing else to do.
Still, he was being paid, and paid well. Naturally, he had to deliver. With a cheerful smile, he explained everything he was doing, what each step was for, and how the dishes would come together. His demeanor and professionalism easily justified Louis’s rates.
“Wow, you’re so thorough. When I used to cook for events, I just kind of threw things together.” Freya was clearly impressed. “I’m definitely going to eat a lot later. I bet everything’s going to taste amazing.”
But when she looked at all the ingredients still laid out on the counter, she grew skeptical. “You’re making this much? Can you finish all of it?”
“I’m only cooking half tonight. The other half’s for breakfast tomorrow. Your housekeeper asked me to prep everything first–she’ll take care of the rest in the morning,” the chef said, neatly dividing the ingredients into two piles.
Freya stopped asking questions and watched in silence, mentally rehearsing each step. She wanted to try making something for Louis herself soon.
Money wasn’t an issue anymore, but she’d always imagined cooking for her future husband. Now that she had one, she was determined to follow through. Her current skills were just enough to get by–it was time to level up.
Meanwhile, Louis had finished up in his study and suddenly noticed Freya was missing. His subordinate was still droning on over the phone when he interrupted with a curt, “Handle it

yourself,” and hung up. Then he got up to look for her.
After checking a few rooms, he finally found her in the kitchen.

Freya was leaning by the doorway, peeking in with a curious little expression that made her look especially adorable. Her face was full of concentration, as if she were watching something of grave importance.
Then Louis remembered–the chef.
He walked over. “What are you watching?”
Startled, Freya turned to him, her serious expression melting into a grin. “The chef’s cooking. He’s really good.”
Really good?
Louis turned his head. The chef was dicing potatoes, the knife tapping rhythmically against the cutting board. Nothing special.
read “Yeah, I guess he’s good,” Louis said. “But standing here is kind of boring. Want to go with me?” He stepped slightly in front of her, blocking her view, and held out his hand.
Freya didn’t think it was boring at all, but those long fingers stretched toward her–and her hand instinctively reached back. She nodded sweetly. “Okay.”
She assumed they’d each be reading their own book, but Louis only pulled out one thick volume from the shelf. Then he took her to his desk, dragged over a chair, sat down, and gave her a gentle tug–pulling her straight onto his lap.
Wait, hold on-
“I thought we were going to read?”
“We are. Look at the pictures,” Louis said, opening a photo album.
The first photo showed Qin Andres with a young couple. The man looked a lot like Louis, and the woman was stunning–with features that clearly echoed in Louis’s face.
No–Louis looked like them. He took after both of them.
