Louis looked at Freya. She gave an awkward smile. “The lady’s right. That guy was a piece of trash–completely incomparable. I’d have to be out of my mind to have anything to do with someone like that again. He only came looking for me because he was up to no good. Luckily, I’m not as naïve as I used to be. I’m not that easy to fool anymore.”

With just a few sentences, she had explained the situation, made her stance clear, and emphasized that she wouldn’t be tricked again. For the first time, Freya felt like she was a lot smarter than she’d given herself credit for.

Louis didn’t say anything. He simply recalled what Freya had said the last time, then looked at her.

The lady nodded repeatedly. “Exactly, exactly. You’re a smart young woman.”

By then, the cashier had already scanned the items and handed the card back to Freya with both hands. “Miss, here’s your card.”

Freya took it, gave the older lady a quick farewell, and hurried out with Louis. She figured it was best to explain things right away. Otherwise, it might turn into a ticking time bomb. So, once they were outside the supermarket, she quickly said:

“Yeah, super stingy. Back then he acted all refined, like he was some elite. At the time, the cannon fodder—no, I mean I thought he was some impressive upperclassman, so I felt a bit inferior around him. I was always worried he’d think I was only after his money, so I worked hard and gave everything to him. Turns out, I later overheard him saying he actually liked my classmate, and I was just a fling. Good thing I never let him get what he wanted–otherwise, I’d feel disgusted for life.”

The more Freya talked, the angrier she got. She absolutely loathed scumbags like him. But in Louis‘ ears, it sounded more like she was venting on behalf of the original cannon fodder–because no one refers to someone else’s experience as “I almost let him get what he wanted“. Most people wouldn’t self–deprecate like that. That’s when Louis realized: in Freya’s mind, the previous woman–the original version of herself—was just cannon fodder.
