Chapter 41 Asking for Money

That last line hit Susan right where it hurt. She had never really been the strong, independent career–woman type. Pretending not to be anxious about marriage was just that–pretending. In truth, she was absolutely desperate. The problem was, any man she considered acceptable didn’t want anything to do with her. On the surface, she looked graceful and refined, but behind the scenes, plenty of people knew her true colors. No matter how hard she tried to rebrand herself, it just didn’t
work
Her family had finally come up with a strategy: lay low and try to fade from the public’s memory. The reason she’d reached out to Freya this time was to pull off a particular plan–something that would let her show off in front of the man she’d set her sights on. But if Freya went around talking, especially to the gossip–hungry crowd, the whole thing would backfire. That kind of loss definitely wasn’t worth it.
“Freya, what are you saying? What kind of relationship do we have? Of course I’d never just stand by and watch you suffer. Didn’t I come to see you as soon as I got back from overseas?” Susan clasped Freya’s hand with both of hers, her face full of empathy.
“You know me–I’ve always been softhearted, I hate seeing strangers suffer, let alone someone like you. Don’t worry, I don’t have that much money on hand, but I can send you eighty, maybe a hundred thousand. That should help you out for now. And please, don’t be polite with me.”
Alright then–Freya had no problem wringing some blood from this stone. Even if it wasn’t much, getting anything out of Susan was already a win. That was the real goal: to make her squirm a little. Anything extra was just icing on the cake.
Freya continued eating, answering casually, “How would I know? You know I never studied anything related to business. Even if he told me every detail, I wouldn’t understand a word of it. As long as we’ve still got food to eat, that’s all that matters. He’s always been a busy guy–I don’t know what he’s busy with, and even if I asked, I wouldn’t get it. I was thinking about divorcing him at one point, but then he said we weren’t in debt anymore, so I figured, whatever, I’ll stick around.”
