“You’re planning to go out and get a job? That’s not going to work. Haven’t you been unemployed ever since graduation? You’ve got no experience–what can you even do?” Susan imagined running into Freya working at a cashier or in a supermarket, and that mental image gave her a twisted sense of satisfaction. “Good jobs aren’t easy to come by. The only things left are the ones that don’t need any real skills. You think you can handle that?”

Freya gave her a strange look. “What’s so hard about that? At the very least, I’m a proper graduate from a top university. Sure, I’ve never worked before, but I can learn. I’ve got all the basic skills–like English. And I’ve got solid subject knowledge too. I’m good.”

That reminded Susan–Freya had gotten into a top school on her own merit. It was only after that she’d crossed paths with Louis and Clement. In contrast, Susan herself had been a poor student who had to rely on her family to send her overseas and buy credentials. Her mood instantly soured, but she wasn’t about to back down.

“Sure, education matters. But so does experience. You’re only just starting now–there’s no way you can compete with fresh grads. It’s not going to be easy.”

I’ll give it a shot. If I could get into a top school, adapting to a simple job can’t possibly be harder than the SATs, right?” Freya added, as if suddenly reminded:

Chapter 42 1

In other words, you’re just a useless person who has to rely on others to survive, huh? Susan had to fight hard not to let her expression twist in fury. No wonder her life turned out so patheticshe can’t even talk like a normal person.

Chapter 42 2

Maybe a father could still put up with a useless daughter. But once you became someone’s wife and had no competence? It was almost inevitable that some other woman from the outside would step in and take your place in public. Meanwhile, you’d be left with nothing but a title-“Mrs. So–and–so“-and become a laughingstock in upper–class society.

There was no way someone as proud as Susan could tolerate a future like that. But she was so insufferable–never once had she spoken a single kind or respectful word from the beginning. So Freya made it her mission to jab at her every chance she got. What, did she think I’m an easy target?
