Feeling jittery for no apparent reason.
Jason had bombarded her with calls and texts all day long before, yet she never felt this anxious.
Her phone was on the brink of cutting off when she finally swiped to answer, "Hello?"
Jason's voice was as steady as ever, "I'm at your doorstep. Can you come out for a sec?"
Sophia's head whipped around to look outside.
The trees cast dense shadows, and the dim light barely outlined a tall figure standing beyond the fence.
"Something up this late?" Sophia asked.
"Just come out!" The man insisted.
"Alright."
With a nod, Sophia slipped on her shoes and a jacket and headed outside.
As she drew closer, the man's silhouette under the streetlight became clearer, and Sophia's steps slowed, her heartbeat, however, raced. Suddenly, she didn't want to see him, felt like turning around and heading back.
Hearing footsteps, Jason turned to look her way. His eyes, hidden behind his glasses, were deep and mysterious, always keeping his emotions veiled, exuding an aura of distant elegance.
Sophia's face, framed by the hood of her down jacket, looked even smaller and more delicate, her eyes shining brightly in the light, "What's up? You needed something?"
Jason handed her something, "Cream puffs, all your favorite flavors."
He hadn't been with Jewel that afternoon; they had just left together.
He met a couple of friends, had dinner, chatted about work, and on his way home, passed the dessert shop from last night. He stopped to buy the cream puffs he hadn't gotten her the night before.
Sophia didn't take them, "I've told you, I've put on weight recently. I'm not eating at night anymore."
Sophia, however, stepped back, her stance clearly distancing.
Jason frowned immediately, "What's this supposed to mean?"
Sophia bit her lip softly, murmuring, "Before, we could mess around without care because you didn't have a girlfriend. Now that you're with Jewel, it’s probably better if we keep our distance."
Jason's temper flared instantly, his brows furrowing as he tried to keep his voice calm, "What's your take on me and Jewel?"
Sophia smiled, "It's great, you guys are well-matched! And I do hope you'll get over Estelle Macclain soon."
The cold light reflected off Jason's glasses, his gaze dark and intense, "Listen, I've never liked Estelle."
Sophia stared at him in shock, blurting out, "If you don't like Estelle, then who do you like?"
"What do you think? After all these years, the way I've poured my heart out for her, taken care of her wholeheartedly, who do you think I like?"
