In the evening, Charlotte went home for dinner after work before heading out to treat Brian.
But right after the meal, she noticed Amber had a bandage on her hand. Her heart skipped a beat as she asked with concern, "Amber, what happened to your hand?"
Amber saw how worried Charlotte was and quickly explained, "Don't worry, Mommy. I just got scratched by a tree branch." Then she told her about chasing the kitten and crawling through the greenery.
Charlotte couldn't help but smile. "You little troublemaker—don't do that again next time. You need to be more careful. If it leaves a scar and you don't look as pretty anymore? Don't come crying then."
"It's okay! I won't be ugly—because I have a super awesome doctor mommy!" Amber chirped, snuggling up to Charlotte affectionately and melting her heart with sweet words.
Still, Charlotte remained sensible and gave a reminder. "You can play outside, but make sure not to go near the second villa, understand?"
The second villa? Wasn't that where Kayden lived? She had just been there earlier today.
Feeling guilty, Amber pretended to be confused and asked, "Why not?"
Charlotte kept a straight face and fibbed, "Because there are men in black over there who look scary. I'm afraid something might happen to you. What if bad people take you away and I never see you again?"
Amber listened but saw right through the lie. Mommy didn't want her near that awful ex-husband.
She nodded sweetly and said, "Okay, Mommy. I promise I won't go over there."
Even though she agreed easily, Charlotte still felt uneasy. Unlike her, who went to work during the day, Amber stayed at home. Now that Brian was working from home, the chances of them running into each other were too high.
So she made a decision.
"Alright then, I'll find you a kindergarten. You'll start school tomorrow."
