A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 509

Chapter 50er

Chapter 506

ALEXANDER

I arrived at the mansion a little while later.

The gates opened automatically as I approached, and I drove through before parking in my usual spot.

For a moment, I remained seated behind the wheel.

Just listening.

Watching.

Half expecting some part of me to suddenly decide this entire trip was ridiculous and unnecessary.

It didn’t.

With a quiet sigh, I got out of the car.

Then walked around to the back seat and grabbed the shopping bags.

There were more of them than I had intended to buy.

Apparently, when someone as clueless as me entered a grocery store with vague instructions from Irene,

the result was excessive spending.

I shut the car door with my hip and headed toward the house.

The mansion stood exactly as it always did.

I climbed the front steps and rang the doorbell once.

No answer.

That wasn’t particularly unusual.

She was probably busy somewhere in the house.

After waiting a few seconds, I reached for the handle and pushed.

The door opened immediately.

Balancing the bags, I stepped inside and closed the door behind me.

The house was quiet.

But I knew she was home.

I could smell herstrongly.

The familiar scent lingered throughout the house, making it obvious she had been here recently.

I carried the bags farther into the living room before setting them down near one of the sofas.

Mom?called.

No answer.

Mom.

A few seconds later, movement caught my attention.

The back door opened.

Then Helen stepped into the living room.

She lookedwell.

The moment she saw me, surprise flashed across her face.

Genuine surprise.

Which wasn’t something I saw very often.

Alex?

I couldn’t help smiling a little.

Hello, Mom.

She looked me over quickly.

The surprise remained.

Then it shifted into concern immediately.

You didn’t call.

There was suspicion in her voice now.

I already knew where her thoughts had gone.

When was the last time you showed up without notice?she asked.

I laughed.

A small one.

Because she wasn’t wrong.

Normally, I would have called.

Or texted.

Even when it was unplanned.

The fact that I hadn’t done any of those things was apparently alarming enough for her to start imagining

disasters.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

What happened?

knew exactly who she was asking about.

Nothing happened

Alexander.

Seriously, everything is fine,I said.

She folded her arms.

Is Faye alright?

I chuckled.

There it is.

Her expression didn’t change.

If you’re standing in my living room unexpectedly, then something is wrong.”

Everything is fine.

She continued staring at me.

Waiting.

I shook my head.

Faye is fine.

Are you sure?she asked.

Yes.

And you’re not hiding anything?

No. Why would I be hiding it when I’m already here?I said.

The concern slowly faded from her face.

Not completely.

I could practically see the relief settling over her.

Which made me feel slightly guilty for worrying her in the first place.

I just came to check on you,I said. To be sure you’re okay.

That seemed to surprise her even more than my unexpected arrival.

For a moment, she simply blinked.

Then her gaze dropped toward the shopping bags sitting near the sofa.

Only now did she seem to notice them.

Her eyebrow lifted.

What are those?

I glanced over my shoulder.

Then remembered I had abandoned them the second I entered the house.

I walked back toward the sofa and picked them up again.

I stopped by a store on the way here.

Her eyes moved between me and the bags.

Still confused.

I lifted them slightly.

I got some groceries.

The confusion deepened.

For me?

Yes.

A small laugh escaped her.

I found myself smiling despite myself.

I wasn’t really sure what to buy,I admitted. So I just got what seemed useful.

I handed her one of the bags.

I don’t know if you’ll actually like any of it.

Helen looked down at the groceries.
