SILVER HOLLOW
THIRD PERSON
Sage stood outside Jason’s office for several long seconds.
Her hand hovered just above the door.
She had come this far twice already.
Both times, she had turned around before knocking.
She wasn’t entirely sure why.
Perhaps because she still wasn’t convinced she had anything to apologize for.
Or perhaps because, deep down, she knew she had crossed a line when she brought Faye into the
argument.
Either way…
The conversation had lingered in her mind far longer than she cared to admit.
With a quiet breath, she finally knocked.
“Come in,” Jason said from inside.
Sage pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Jason sat behind his desk exactly as she had expected.
Several papers were spread neatly before him.
He looked up when she entered.
There wasn’t any visible irritation on his face.
No frustration.
No anger.
Just quiet acknowledgment.
“Sage,” Jason said.
She gave him a small nod.
“Jason.”
His gaze remained on her for only a moment before returning to the report in front of him.
He continued reading as though nothing unusual had happened.

Sage remained standing.
She had expected…
Something.
A question.
A remark.
Even a trace of the tension that had existed between them earlier.
Instead…
There was nothing.
Jason simply turned another page.
The silence stretched long enough for it to become awkward.
Finally, Sage cleared her throat.
“You’re busy,” Sage said.
Jason nodded without looking up.
“There’s a lot to get through,” Jason replied.
Another silence followed.
Sage shifted her weight slightly.
“I actually came to talk to you.”
That finally drew his attention back to her.
Jason placed the document down.
“You have my attention,” Jason said calmly.
There was no impatience in his voice.
No sarcasm.
He simply waited.
For some reason…
That made the words harder to say.
Sage looked away briefly before meeting his eyes again.
“I wanted to apologize.”
Jason remained quiet.

Sage continued.
“shouldn’t have said what I said earlier.”
She paused.
“About… Faye.”
Jason watched her without interrupting.
“I was annoyed. I let the argument get the better of me. I shouldn’t have mocked you either.”
The room became quiet again.
Jason held her gaze for another second before giving a single nod.
“Alright,” Jason said.
Sage blinked.
“…Alright?”
“Yes.”
Another nod.
“I appreciate the apology.”
That was all.
No discussion.
No questions.
No attempt to revisit the argument.
He simply picked up the report on his desk again.
Sage frowned almost without realizing it.
She had expected him to say more.
Anything.
Instead, he resumed reading.
She stood there for another few moments before speaking again.
“So…”
Jason looked up once more.
“Is that all you’re going to say?” Sage asked.
“What else would you like me to say?” Jason replied.

She opened her mouth…
Then closed it again.
She wasn’t entirely sure.
“I just…”
She hesitated.
“I thought you might still be upset.”
Jason leaned back slightly in his chair.
“No,” Jason replied.
His answer came so easily that it caught her off guard.
“We both said things we shouldn’t have. It happened. There’s no point dwelling on it.”
His voice remained even.
Calm.
Almost… detached.
Sage searched his face.
She couldn’t find any trace of resentment.
But somehow…
That bothered her even more.
She folded her arms loosely.
“So we’re just moving on?”

Jason nodded once. “Yes. There’s too much happening right now for me to spend time holding onto an
argument.”
He glanced briefly at the stack of reports waiting beside him. “I have more pressing matters.”
The words weren’t rude.
If anything…
They were perfectly reasonable.
Yet something about them made Sage’s chest tighten.
She had expected resistance.
She had expected him to challenge her the way he usually did.
To explain himself.

To tell her why he had been hurt.
Instead….
It was as though the conversation no longer mattered to him.
She found herself speaking before she had fully thought it through. “You’re different.”
Jason looked at her. “Different?”
“You usually don’t let things go this easily,” Sage said.
For the first time since she entered the office, Jason was still.
He seemed to think about her observation for a moment.
Then he gave a faint shrug.
“Maybe I’m just tired,” Jason said.
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Sage wasn’t convinced.
She studied him carefully.
His face looked more exhausted than she had ever seen it.
There were faint shadows beneath his eyes.
His shoulders seemed heavier.
Even the way he sat had changed.
He looked…
