Chapter 541
JASON
The walk to my father–in–law’s quarters was a quiet one.
The corridors of the pack house had grown noticeably calmer now that evening had settled.
Only the occasional greeting interrupted the silence.
Normally, I would have acknowledged each one with more than a simple nod.
Tonight…
My mind was elsewhere.
Every step seemed to carry the weight of another unanswered question.
Claim
By the time I reached the familiar wooden door at the end of the eastern corridor, I had already gone over
the situation in my head countless times.
No matter how I rearranged the pieces…
They refused to fit together.
I raised my hand and knocked gently.
There was a brief pause.
Then I heard movement inside.
A moment later, the door opened.
My father–in–law stood there, looking at me with mild surprise.
He wasn’t dressed formally anymore.
He had evidently settled in for the evening, wearing a simple dark shirt and loose trousers that made him look far more like the retired Beta he now was than the man who had once commanded half the wolves in
Silver Hollow.
His surprise lasted only a second before it softened into a welcoming smile.
“I wasn’t expecting you this evening,” he said.
“I hope I’m not disturbing you,” I replied.
He stepped aside almost immediately.
“You never have to ask that,” he said warmly.
“Come in,”
I thanked him quietly and stepped inside.
<Chapter 541
The quarters were comfortable without being extravagant.
A fire burned steadily inside the fireplace.
Claim
Everything about the room reflected the kind of calm that had been missing from my own office for days.
He gestured toward one of the armchairs.
“Sit.”
I lowered myself into it while he returned to his own seat opposite me.
For a few moments, neither of us spoke.
He simply observed me.
Not in a way that made me uncomfortable.
More like someone trying to determine whether I wanted advice…
Or simply someone willing to listen.
Unfortunately…
I wasn’t entirely sure which one I needed.
He finally broke the silence.
“You look tired.”
I let out a quiet laugh.
“I feel worse than I look.”
“I believe that,” he replied.
He leaned back comfortably.
“I’ve been hearing bits and pieces all day,” he said.
I nodded.
“I’m sure you have.”
There wasn’t any need to explain what he meant.
Like every member of the council, he already knew about the missing shipments.
He knew about the warehouse explosion.
He knew that Silver Hollow had suffered another serious blow.
What he didn’t know…
Were the details that had been uncovered only hours earlier.
<Chapter 541-
Even then, I chose not to mention the murdered guard.
Not yet.
That investigation was still too delicate.
Instead, I focused on everything else.
I exhaled slowly.
“I don’t know where to begin,” I admitted.
He remained silent, allowing me to continue.
“It feels like every direction I turn, another problem appears.”
“The supply shipments disappear.”
“Then the warehouse explodes.”
“Now everyone expects answers.”
He listened without interrupting.
I appreciated that.
Too many people listened only long enough to prepare their own opinions.
He listened simply to understand.
I continued.
“I’ve spent days reviewing reports.”
“I’ve questioned people.”
“I’ve called meetings.”
“I’ve gone over every possibility I can think of.”
I shook my head.
“And somehow…”
“I feel farther away from the truth than when this all started.”
The words left me before I realized how much I had been holding them back.
I leaned forward slightly, resting my forearms on my knees.
“I honestly don’t know what I’m missing.”
“There has to be something.”
“Some connection.”

“Some detail.”
“But I can’t see it.”
The room became quiet.
The older man regarded me thoughtfully for several moments before speaking.
Claim
“I’ve watched you carry this on your shoulders for days,” he said. “I was beginning to wonder when you’d
finally come.”
His words made me look up.
“You expected me?”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“I hoped you would.”
I couldn’t help smiling faintly myself.
“I suppose I finally admitted I don’t have all the answers.”
He nodded approvingly.
“That’s usually the first step toward finding them.”
His calmness was strangely reassuring.
I hadn’t come looking for someone to solve the mystery for me.
I wasn’t naive enough to believe anyone could.
What I needed…
Was perspective.
Someone who wasn’t buried beneath the same frustration I was.
“I need guidance,” I admitted quietly.
“I’m beginning to question every decision I make.”
was.
“I keep wondering whether I’ve overlooked something obvious.”
He remained silent for another moment before speaking.
“I won’t pretend I have the answers you’re looking for,” he said. “I wish I did.”
His honesty didn’t disappoint me.
In fact…
It was exactly why I trusted him.
He had never been the kind of man to invent certainty where none existed.

“But…” he continued, “I do have an observation.”
I sat a little straighter.
“I’m listening.”
He folded his hands together comfortably.
“You’re treating this as though you’re dealing with two separate crises.”
I frowned.
“Aren’t I?”
He slowly shook his head.
“I don’t believe so.”
That caught my attention immediately.
He leaned forward slightly.
“Think about it.”
“The supply trucks.”
“The missing goods.”
“The warehouse explosion.”
He paused just long enough for the words to settle.
“If that explosion truly wasn’t an accident…”
“I find it very difficult to believe it has nothing to do with the stolen shipments.”
I remained quiet.
He continued.
“To me… They feel connected. Not similar. Connected. The same hand that interfered with
lines may very well be the same hand that destroyed your warehouse.”
I found myself thinking back over everything again.
He wasn’t making an unreasonable assumption.
In fact…
It explained far more than treating each incident separately.
It had crossed my mind, but I had discarded it then.
He continued speaking calmly.
