The morning training session had done little to clear my head.
If anything, it had only given me more time to think.
Every punch I threw.
Every kick.
Every sprint across the training grounds.
Somehow, my thoughts always wandered back to the attack.

By the time I finished, a thin layer of sweat clung to my skin, and strands of hair had escaped my ponytail
and stuck to the side of my face.
I unscrewed my water bottle and took a long drink as I made my way toward the main house.
The compound was already alive with activity.
Warriors crossed the courtyard in small groups.
Servants hurried between buildings.
A few younger wolves were just beginning their morning drills.
Everything appeared perfectly normal.
Until movement near the eastern pathway caught my attention.
I slowed my steps.
A group of warriors was escorting three familiar men across the courtyard.
Not escorting.
Dragging.
Their hands had been restrained behind their backs.
One of them tried to jerk free, only to receive a firm shove that forced him to keep walking.
I lowered my water bottle.
My eyebrows drew together.
I recognized them immediately.
They were the same three men I had briefly seen leaving Alexander’s office yesterday.
The men he’d been arguing with before I went in to ask if I could visit Helen alone.

watched silently as they were marched past the courtyard and toward the detention wing built into the eastern side of the compound.
The realization made me stop walking altogether.
They weren’t simply being questioned.
They were being locked up.
My gaze lingered on them until the heavy iron gate disappeared behind the last warrior.
Something told me this had everything to do with yesterday.
And I intended to find out exactly what.
By the time I reached the main house, most of the sweat from training had already begun to dry against my skin. My muscles still carried the pleasant ache from the morning session, but my mind was occupied with something entirely different.
The image of those three men being dragged toward the detention wing refused to leave me alone. I had
recognized them immediately. They were the same men I had seen storming out of Alexander’s office the
previous day.
I pushed the front door open and stepped inside.
The house was unusually quiet for that time of the morning. A few servants moved about in the distance,
going about their duties, but the living room itself was empty except for Alexander.
He stood near one of the large windows with his phone pressed to his ear. He glanced in my direction as I
entered and gave me a small smile before turning his attention back to the call.
“I’ll speak to you later, Mom. Take care of yourself,” Alexander said before ending the call.
He slipped the phone into his pocket and walked toward me.
“I was just speaking with my mother,” Alexander explained.
A smile spread across my face almost immediately.
“She called to check on both of us?” I asked.
Alexander nodded.
“She did,” Alexander replied. “She wanted to know how we were doing after everything that happened
yesterday.”
A quiet wave of relief washed over me.
“I’m happy to hear that,” I said. “It means she’s alright.”
“I thought the same thing,” Alexander replied. “I also told her that you had planned to visit her yesterday,
but something rather complicated came up and the visit had to be cancelled.”

I’ll call her myself later,” I said. “I don’t want her worrying untiecessarily, especially after I failed to show up
yesterday.”
“I’m sure she’d appreciate hearing your voice,” Alexander said.
I nodded absentmindedly, but my thoughts had already drifted back to what I had witnessed outside only
a few minutes earlier.
“I saw something on my way into the house,” I began. “Those three men who were being taken toward the detention wing… I recognized them. They were the same men I saw leaving your office yesterday.”
Alexander’s expression became noticeably more serious.
“They are the same men,” Alexander confirmed.
I folded my arms loosely across my chest.
“So what exactly was the issue with them?” I asked. “Yesterday, they looked furious when they came out of
your office, and now they’re being dragged into the cells.”
Alexander let out a quiet breath before answering.
“They came to see me yesterday morning as representatives of several settlements along our northern
border,” Alexander explained. “According to them, those communities have been neglected for years. They
believe they have sacrificed more than the rest of the pack because they are always the first to face
danger whenever outsiders cross into Blood Crescent territory.”
He paused briefly before continuing.
“They claimed their villages have received very little attention despite everything they’ve contributed. Their
argument was that while the central territory continues to develop, the border communities have largely
been left to fend for themselves.”
I listened quietly without interrupting.
“They weren’t just there to complain,” Alexander continued. “They came with a proposal. They wanted the
border settlements to govern themselves. They still wanted to remain part of Blood Crescent under my
authority, but they wanted the freedom to manage their own affairs without seeking approval from the
capital.”
I stared at him for a moment, surprised.
“They wanted autonomy?” I asked.
Alexander nodded.
“They did,” Alexander replied. “Naturally, I refused.”
“I can imagine that didn’t go over very well,” I said.
