After running the gauntlet, Winifred finally slid into the backseat of the car.
Holden tapped the assistant holding the door for her. "We had quite the chat today. I wonder how your boss will feel when he hears about it."
The assistant kept his face carefully blank. "I apologize, sir, but I have no authority to interfere in my employer's personal matters."
Holden smirked. "Keep us waiting much longer, and Leland might just have your head."
The assistant said nothing, simply closing the door and walking around to the driver's side.
Through the tinted glass, Holden stared into the car. Winifred couldn't escape his dark, predatory gaze. Without warning, his lips curled into a twisted, deranged smile aimed right at her. It was the look of a psychopath freshly escaped from an asylum.
The sheer malice in his expression sent a jolt of revulsion straight to her heart. It made her stomach turn.
She couldn't stop herself from rolling down the window. "Holden, keep your sick, twisted games to yourself. I am not going to your engagement party."
Holden stood there, arrogant and untouchable. "That's not up to you. Iris invited you, so you will be there."
A fire ignited deep in her chest. She had reached her breaking point. "You just bend over backward for her, don't you? Whatever she wants, she gets?"
"Of course. Iris is my entire world. I support every single thing she wants to do."
"Even if what she wants is purely evil?"
"Absolutely. As long as it makes her happy."
Beside him, Chuck Stroud's pudgy face scrunched up into a sycophantic grin. "My, my, Mr. Lockwood. You truly are a modern romantic. Your love for Ms. Morgan is incredibly moving."
Chuck threw an arm over Holden's shoulder, and the two men walked off together.
Leland blinked, momentarily stunned.
Kian took that reaction as proof that he had successfully exposed Winifred, and that Leland was just realizing he had fallen for a toxic, manipulative woman. Feeling incredibly righteous, Kian pressed on.
"She has repeatedly schemed to insert herself into the relationship between my good friend Iris Morgan and Holden. The woman is vicious and calculating. Her longest con took three years to plan, and her most recent stunts happened just last night and this morning. I won't even get into last night, but as for this morning... well, I'm sure you know exactly what happened."
Leland shifted his gaze to Holden and Iris. "Why don't the two of you tell me? How exactly did Dr. Shultz try to get between you?"
Holden didn't hesitate. "She's completely obsessed with me."
Leland's narrow eyes widened a fraction. "And what exactly has she done to prove this?"
Holden began listing her supposed crimes with rhythmic precision. "She stalks me. She orchestrated a car accident just to lure me to her clinic. I am madly in love with Iris, and we're about to be engaged. Winifred was so consumed by jealousy that she physically assaulted Iris. Her boss even had to pay for a broken phone over it. She's delusional, constantly harassing us. Wherever I go, she makes sure she's there."
