"No!" Jordyn sobbed. "Dad has a... a new wife, and he doesn't want me either! Waaah!"
Iris teared up, choking on a sob. "You still have Uncle Holden. He loves you even more than your dad does."
Jordyn stopped crying. She reached up with her chubby little hands to cup Holden's face, her voice trembling. "Uncle Holden, can you be my dad?"
Winifred's fingers tightened around her teacup.
Taking the enemy who had hurt your own flesh and blood as a father figure... How exactly did one justify that?
Holden laughed softly. "You just said it yourself, I'm your Uncle Holden."
"But if you become my dad, I won't have to call you uncle anymore!"
Under Iris's expectant gaze, Holden gently pinched Jordyn's cheek. "When your dad gets back from Bali, I'll ask him. If he says yes, I can be your godfather. How does that sound?"
"God-feather?"
God-feather?
Jordyn chewed on the word. A dad was a dad, and a godfather still had 'father' in it, so that meant he could be her dad!
"Yeah!" She giggled. "God-feather!"
Holden smoothed her messy hair behind her ears.
Jordyn looked at him seriously. "So, tell me. Am I pretty?"
"Very pretty. Hahaha."
"Don't laugh! Be serious!"
Holden turned his head, trying to stifle his laughter.
Jordyn forced his face back toward her, desperate for validation. "I'm prettier than Annelise, right?"
Holden had probably already forgotten who Annelise even was. Other people's children, no matter how cute, could never compare to his own family.
He looked at her sincerely. "You're much prettier than Annelise, and much more lovable too."
Jordyn beamed, wiggling happily. "I want a cherry now!"
"Good girl."
"Because a mom loves her baby. As the baby grows day by day, the mom's love grows too. The tummy gets bigger because it's filled with love."
"Oh! I get it! Then the baby fits!"
"Exactly. You're so smart, sweetie."
They chatted a bit more before Jordyn suddenly gasped. "Wait, if the baby is inside the tummy, getting it out must hurt the mom, right?"
"Yes, it hurts very much. That's why we have to love our moms."
Jordyn's eyes went wide as she seriously considered this. "It hurts her?"
"That's right."
"How much does it hurt? Does she cry? Does the dad comfort her when she cries?"
"Well..."
Holden turned his head, his gaze meeting Winifred's across the room.
"Dr. Shultz, you're the medical professional here. Care to explain?"
