Mrs. Channing walked right into the humiliating spectacle.
Quentin was burning with shame. "I'm so sorry!" he blurted out before she could even speak, desperate to take the hit. "Please tell me the name of the jeweler. I'll buy a brand-new set to replace these as an apology."
Shelly was still frantically tugging at the jade, her wrist rubbed raw and bright red. There was no way they could hand it back to Winifred in this condition.
Mrs. Channing shot Quentin a look of pure disgust. "I didn't think you were this kind of man. Consider this the last time we ever speak."
Without another word, she pulled out her phone and texted him the address of the jeweler.
Quentin's lips trembled as he forced himself to ask, "Is... is Dr. Shultz celebrating something tonight?"
"It's her twins' birthday," Mrs. Channing replied coldly, not even looking up from her screen. The warmth she had shown earlier was entirely gone.
Desperate, Quentin tried to salvage the situation. "You might have the wrong idea about me. What you're seeing isn't the whole truth—"
Mrs. Channing finally looked up, her eyes blazing. "You abandoned your 'wife' and kids to party with your mistress, and you have the nerve to make excuses?"
Still wrestling with the stuck bracelet and fueled by embarrassment, Shelly snapped. "Don't talk nonsense! Dr. Adams is single, and so am I! We are dating legitimately. Winifred is the one who was married and divorced—those kids belong to her ex-husband! Dr. Adams was just covering for her! Get your facts straight before you judge!"
Her outburst did not win any sympathy. Mrs. Channing just let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"With that vicious, venomous attitude of yours, you're clearly no good."
She turned her piercing gaze back to Quentin. "My older daughter is in the same class as Larissa. I personally saw Dr. Shultz, heavily pregnant, handling Larissa's school enrollment. Her kindness and dedication were moving. It's incredibly rare to see an aunt go to such lengths for her niece. Later, when my family needed medical care, we went straight to her. For over three years, I've watched her pour her heart and soul into the clinic and into your entire family. Let's be perfectly clear—without Dr. Shultz, you wouldn't have your precious reputation or your comfortable life. You have absolutely no conscience to treat her this way."
"Mrs. Channing, please, sit here," she said, gesturing to the chair next to her, with Annie securely on her lap.
Mrs. Channing opened her mouth, her expression a mix of lingering anger and hesitation, clearly wanting to say something about what had just happened. But before she could get a word out, a tall, imposing figure strode into the room.
Mrs. Channing gasped. "Is that... Mr. Lockwood? Leland Lockwood, from the Kingsbridge Lockwoods?"
Leland walked in, bringing a commanding yet warm presence with him. "Hello, everyone," he smiled.
Mrs. Channing immediately stood up, extending her hand. "Mr. Lockwood, I'm the wife of Jonah Channing, CEO of Summit Realty. I've seen you at a few industry galas. It's an honor to meet you!"
Summit Realty was just a mid-tier firm among the giants in Kingsbridge, so Leland didn't really recognize the name, but he remained perfectly polite.
