Shelly had already practically planned her life as a wealthy clinic director's wife. Hearing the words "we're done" felt like the sky crashing down on her.
She got right in Quentin's face and shrieked, "Absolutely not!"
"It's not up to you!" Quentin replied with icy detachment. His mind was made up.
He had never truly loved this woman anyway. He had only been with her for the thrill. Shelly was uninhibited in bed; she was wild. He had been addicted to the physical rush she gave him. But after a few months, the novelty had worn off, and his physical desires had leveled out.
Tonight, Shelly had crossed the line, doing several things that thoroughly disgusted him. He sneered at her parenting philosophy—indulging kids in drinking and letting them interrupt adults were massive red flags of terrible upbringing. She was raising menaces.
Yet, she refused to listen to reason, stubbornly clinging to her toxic methods.
It proved she had zero class. Marrying her would be a disaster; she could never manage a respectable household or raise proper children.
But the final straw—the thing that truly solidified his decision to dump her—was her touching Mrs. Channing's gift and humiliating him in public. She had dragged his name through the mud. He had lost his dignity, his money, and his patience. A deep, visceral disgust for her had taken root in his chest. Looking at her now was like looking at a pile of garbage on the sidewalk. He didn't want to touch her ever again. The fun was over; it was time to take out the trash.
He had already formulated his plan: sever ties with this liability immediately, and then go straight after Winifred. He had to act fast, before that wealthy guy could build a solid foundation with her and the kids. He had to win them back.
Quentin even felt a twisted sense of internal balance now. He no longer cared that Winifred had been married to Holden Lockwood and had his children. Look at him—he had just spent months messing around with Shelly. They were basically the same. His own indiscretions cancelled out her past divorce. They were even.
Yes. Even. The mental hurdle that had always bothered him was completely gone.
"Her kids have been by my side since the day they were born. I raised them. They call me Dad. They eat at my table and sleep under my roof. That foundational bond can never be erased. They can't leave me. They need me."
"Yes, some unfortunate things happened recently, but that was all because of you. You caused all the damage."
Now that he was kicking the instigator to the curb, all the unpleasantness would vanish with her. Winifred wouldn't blame him anymore.
Shelly looked like she was about to explode. "Because of me?! Ha! You're blaming everything on me? Washing your hands clean?"
"Who else?" Quentin glared at her. "If you hadn't seduced me and clung to me, I never would have done anything to hurt Winifred!"
