"If you're busy with the move, we can hold off until you're settled."
The new house had already been professionally cleaned; she just needed to move in. There was zero chance Quentin would let her take a single household item from his place anyway, not even the small pieces of furniture she had saved up to buy over the years.
She planned to just call an Uber tomorrow morning, load the kids in, and be done with it. Then she could go out and buy the daily essentials, cook dinner, and finally start living a normal family life. The move itself wouldn't be that stressful.
Before they could finish the conversation, they arrived at the hotel. Leland pulled over.
"I'm leaving Fletcher with you. Keep him as long as you need tomorrow."
"You want me to use your assistant..."
That didn't seem appropriate. She didn't want to inconvenience the poor guy.
"You're moving tomorrow with two toddlers. Having Fletcher around to carry boxes and watch the kids will make things infinitely easier."
"I..."
Leland turned to her, his expression radiating absolute sincerity. "Winifred, I was late to the party. You spent so much time suffering alone in the dark. But things are different now. I'm in your life. Whatever burdens you have left, I'm carrying them for you."
"Le..."
"I know, I know, career first, romance later, take down the trashy ex and the backstabbing senior, right? Fine. Then I'll carry all the burdens myself. Happy?"
He laughed softly. His handsome features softened, weaving an invisible, intoxicating net of affection around her. It was sexy, deeply moving, and dangerously easy to fall into.
Flustered, Winifred quickly opened the car door and stepped out. "Drive safe," she waved.
"Are you drunk?" she asked flatly.
"No. I've never been thinking clearer."
Quentin launched into his grand declaration of love. He started by addressing what he assumed was the immediate obstacle.
"I broke up with Shelly tonight. Her vulgarity made your intelligence and grace shine so much brighter. I've had a complete awakening. I know I was wrong. I was blinded by her and I hurt you, and I promise you right now, it will never happen again. I have completely cut ties with her."
Next, he moved on to resolve what he believed were Winifred's lingering grudges, clearing the path for their inevitable reunion.
"I know you're angry that I'm associating with Iris and Holden. But please, let me explain..."
