His long fingers tugged at his tie, loosening his collar. He grabbed a freshly opened bottle of expensive liquor from the table and tilted his head back.
Glug, glug, glug...
He downed it as effortlessly as if it were bottled water, not pausing for a single breath.
Miles panicked and tried to wrestle the bottle away. "You can't drink like this! It's your wedding night!"
What was he going to do if he passed out entirely?
The wedding night was supposedly the groom's ultimate prize.
Holden’s eyes were glassy, his mind clearly miles away as he stubbornly continued to drink.
One bottle down.
He reached for another...
"Oh my god! How much has he had?" Iris gasped, returning from the dance floor only to find Holden completely plastered. Her smile vanished.
Miles forced an awkward laugh. "Uh, well! Holden was just... incredibly overwhelmed with emotion tonight. Watching you dance, he just... drank to... restrain himself!"
Ah.
She knew Holden loved her.
But he really didn't need to love her this much.
They were basically married now; he didn't have to hold back.
Suppressing his urges to the point of drinking himself into a stupor was just cruel to his own body.
Iris looked at him with profound affection and pity. She gestured to the staff. "Take Mr. Lockwood back to the suite."
"Yes, ma'am." Two bodyguards, built like action stars, stepped forward alongside Miles to haul Holden up.
Lifting her heavy skirt, Iris practically sprinted in her stilettos to keep up.
The hotel had meticulously decorated the opulent bridal suite.
The bodyguards deposited Holden onto the massive, custom-sized bed.
Still in her glamorous gown, Iris played the role of the devoted fiancée perfectly, bringing over a basin of warm water and kneeling by the bed to wipe his hands.
She gently patted his knuckles with the damp towel. "Holden..."
"Mm!?"
He heard her?
Iris was startled, then immediately thrilled.
It was so touching! Even dead drunk, he still responded to her voice, proving she was the most important thing in his world.
Kian looked at her, his own eyes reddening.
"Always."
Iris finally asked the question burning in her heart. "If a man deeply, truly loves a woman... but he absolutely refuses to touch her... what does that mean?"
Aching to see her so distressed, Kian gave her exactly the reassurance she needed to hear.
"It means he cherishes you. He adores you so much that he's exercising ultimate self-control. He respects you."
"Is that really it?"
"Absolutely."
"But it's been three years. He's a healthy, normal man. Can someone really hold out that long?"
Kian looked down. "Yes. When a man loves a woman down to his bones, he doesn't just want to possess her... he wants to protect her."
Iris nodded, a wave of relief washing over her. "He does love me. I know it."
Kian smiled softly. "Exactly. So stop worrying and just enjoy your beautiful life together."
Iris looked up, her tear-filled eyes locking onto Kian's.
"I want to have Holden's baby. Can you help me?"
