Holden paused.
Kian internally cheered.
He had found the crack in the armor. Iris was his absolute weak point. Mentioning her instantly brought Holden to a halt.
Seeing how effective it was, Kian brilliantly leaned into it.
"You heard me. It was Iris's idea to take you. She loves you so much, and she’s constantly worrying about your health."
He watched Holden's reaction like a hawk.
He noticed the subtle twitch of Holden's fingers on the spoon as he slowly stirred his oatmeal, clearly deep in thought.
Kian threw more fuel on the fire. "Don't make Iris worry about you all the time. When you passed out drunk last night, she was literally crying with anxiety. If you just go get checked, it'll give her peace of mind."
"Fine," Holden relented.
Kian beamed. "That's exactly right. A good man doesn't let his woman live in fear."
Holden glanced up. "Tell Preston to come too. We'll all go."
Dragging Preston York along was an easy request.
Over the years, Preston had been just as heartbroken over the pain Winifred had supposedly caused Iris. He was always the first in line to offer support.
But...
Kian thought about the actual logistics of this clinic visit.
Preston was simple-minded. Almost childishly straightforward. He might struggle to wrap his head around this covert operation.
"Can it just be the two of us? We don't really need Preston," Kian tried to casually deflect.
"We're friends. If it's a good thing, we all share it," Holden stated firmly.
Kian had pitched it as a free, luxurious, state-of-the-art medical screening. It was supposedly a great perk.
Kian lightly tapped his lips. He had dug his own grave with the sales pitch. There was no backing out now.
They agreed to meet in the lobby of the private hospital at 3:00 PM.
Kian then went straight to Preston's room.
Preston was dead asleep.
"Get up," Kian ordered, yanking on the bare leg sticking out of the blankets.
Preston buckled his belt, his expression dead serious. "I'm doing this for Iris. If she needs it, I'll walk through hell and high water."
"Iris has suffered way too much," Preston muttered, his chest tightening as he remembered coming back from studying abroad and visiting Holden.
They had met at the hospital.
Holden had been alternating between two women.
His mother, Madeleine, who was in a coma in the ICU.
And Iris, the sweet, innocent girl, sitting there with her head wrapped in thick bandages...
A perfectly lovely girl, absolutely ruined by Winifred!
Any man with a shred of decency would despise Winifred and want to protect Iris at all costs.
Doing this for Iris wasn't just helping a friend; it was a matter of justice.
And so, that evening, Kian successfully marched his two best friends into the clinic.
To maintain the illusion of a standard men's health check, all three of them went into the private rooms and... made their respective deposits.
