“We’re here for you.”
“Oh.” Jasmine Miller pulled her gaze away from Heather’s face. She didn't look afraid; in fact, she sat there with perfect composure. Following Madeleine’s strict instructions, she remained calm. There was no need to panic—these were their people.
“Where were you at 9:00 PM on November 15th?” one of the officers asked.
Jasmine blinked, momentarily thrown. “I’ve already answered that.”
“We’ve received new orders to reopen the investigation into this case. Please cooperate.”
Jasmine narrowed her eyes. Taking a closer look, she realized the two officers tonight were indeed new faces. That must mean Madeleine had pulled strings with even higher-ranking officials, securing more power. Which meant... this case was being fast-tracked, and Winifred Shultz’s doom was approaching even sooner.
Leaning back comfortably, she flawlessly recited the testimony Madeleine had coached her on. “I accompanied Dr. Shultz to the backyard to gather herbs. She pulled a snake out of her bag and threw it over the wire fence...”
“I must warn you, committing perjury carries severe legal consequences.”
Jasmine startled. Something wasn’t right. Wait. She needed to call Madeleine. With the matriarch of a massive, wealthy family backing her, she was untouchable. Unlike Winifred, who had no one standing behind her and could only wait to be slaughtered.
“Please hand over your phone.”
“What?”
“You are officially under investigation as a suspect for framing, harboring, and perjury. You are being detained.”
“No... no, no, you’ve made a mistake.” These were supposed to be their people! Madeleine had explained it all so clearly, and Jasmine had spent the last few days comfortably relying on that very network of connections.
“Don't rush this. Let me just make a quick call to Mrs. Lockwood. She’ll explain everything to you.”
It was shocking. Madeleine had an ironclad network; she had Winifred dead to rights. How was it that she was the one getting arrested instead? Reopening the case meant Winifred’s name was being cleared. The world really was unpredictable. The meat already on the chopping block had somehow sprung back to life and knocked out the butcher.
Heather ran, the sound of Jasmine's desperate sobs echoing in her ears. She was terrified and didn't dare look back. Pushing past the people lingering by the clinic exit, she bounded down the steps and plunged into the bitter winter wind. Only when she was far away from the mess did she finally call her husband.
Sean Scott was a military veteran with a strong moral compass who worked as one of Roland Lockwood’s chauffeurs. While waiting for him to pick her up, Heather frantically messaged her coworkers at the Lockwood Mansion.
Janet replied: *[Three police cars suddenly showed up at the house. Madam was taken away.]*
Yasmin added: *[It was awful timing tonight. Mr. Lockwood and Iris went out, the master of the house wasn't home, and the daughters were out too. The police just showed up out of nowhere. Madam was terrified and refused to go, but... there was no one to speak up for her. She was completely alone tonight.]*
Reading this, Heather immediately thought of Dr. Shultz. No one had helped her. No one had spoken up for her. No one had her back. When Winifred had been arrested, she must have felt just as helpless and entirely alone.
